health food store novice needs help

Posted by trouble on March 9, 2002, at 0:57:28

Hi y'all,
Walked into a health food store yesterday for the first time in memory. Told the proprietor about chronic bronchitis and fast-food diet and he sold me 3 things I was wondering what health food veterans think of:
Apple cider vinegar, take 2 tablespoons a day. Tasty! He said it would help digestive process w/ the bad diet. Does anyone agree this is good to take, b/c it's so hard going down, but I'll do it if it's worthwhile.
Spiru-tein soy protein powder, expensive but he said was important supplement to poor diet.
Daily Detox herbal tea, ten dollars, it's supposed to help your liver.
I'm still looking for cold pressed fish and evening primrose oil, no luck so far.
Any advice would be appreciated!

thanks, trouble

no...., that one went kaput since I
moved back. bummer. Good store across HEB
Braker Ln. near the Arboretum area. They had
the "Spectrum Essential Max" brand cold pressed
combined Flax/Borage oil (if you are
in Ausin) last I visted. I don't remember
the health store name (right across from
HEB parking lot).

I don't know about vinager...Just sounds acidic and heartburny. I also have never heard of the soy stuff that was suggested. Though soy in itself does have alot of health benefits, esp for women. Have you ever tried Luna bars? Soy protein in a delicious bar, yumm.

What I can comment on is essential fatty acids. I was taking regular ol' pharmacy brand fish oil. What awful burps...Until I happened upon a great healthfood/supplement store. I buy Barlean's organic cold pressed flax oil capsules. And I really love them. It's very digestable and seems to have some good mood effects...though mild at this point. But, EFA's are severely lacking in the fast food diet, and are a necessary addition for good heart health and organ function.

Just make sure you keep the EFA's in the refrig. as they tend to go rancid.

Soy...(this should probably continue at PSB)

trouble,

Before you go overboard on the soy, you might want to do a little research. I was consuming tons of soy about a year ago. Then I heard that soy actually isn't as good for you as once thought, so I looked it up online. Supposedly Asian cultures don't consume as much soy as we think they do. And America has really gone soy crazy over the last few years. We're putting soy in everything!

Here are some links:

http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa041499.htm

http://www.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/diet.fitness/06/23/soy.danger.wmd/

After reading about the possible dangers of soy alongside it's good qualities, I now simply watch my intake.

First apple cider vinegar. Yes, this is very good, however, not just by itself. Actually, it's an Edgar Cayce recipe: 2 T applecider vinegar, 2 tsp honey mixed in 1 cup warm water. It is very good, helps digestion and other stuff.

Now for soy. Not a good idea. Soy intereferes with thyroid for anyone, and especially for menopausal women. A little bit is OK, but large amounts, like in a daily protein drink, can eventually cause thyroid problems. Soybeans are also one of the most irradiated and pesticided crops in America. If you're looking for a protein powder source, whey protein is a better bet.

Flax seed is also a good source of EPA's and can be mixed in food, on cereals and in your protein drink.
