5htp - is it a farce?

Posted by zarathustra on March 26, 2001, at 12:29:09

I recently procured a bottle of 5htp for depression.
There is very little reliable information on it, and I am wondering if it actually boosts levels of seratonin.

I took my first dose before bed last night and had the strangest night of sleep in my life: I woke up several times in a semi dream-like state (lucid?) and had paralysis! I couldn't move, it was really odd. I had the strangest dreams, in all of them I was flying.

Anyways, anyone knowing if the purported effects are true, please respond.

Not really. Provided you eat meat you are getting lots of aminos. The body has a feed back loop so adding more 5htp does not increase seratonin past a point. Depression is not caused by a lack of seratonin, it is the regulation of seratonin that
improves mood.

This is called sleep paralysis. The body is paralized during some dream states and if you
wake up during one of these you will get "sleep paralysis". It is normal.

the effects are hype, it is hardly worthy of being considered a real antidepressant. The main use for 5-HTP is to make OTC supplements companies rich.

St James said . . .
>Depression is not caused by a lack of serotonin, it is the regulation of serotonin that
improves mood.

This should be engraved somewhere, or made into a stamp. Another way of saying this came from someone a while ago . . .

"Low serotonin in the synapse is not a cause but a symptom of depression"

Those of us who poop out on SSRIs know all about the folly of concentrating exclusively on "serotonin levels"

I used to take 5-htp a few summers ago and it really helped me get through some intense stress. I didn't take it alone, though.. a friend of mine recommended to take these 3 supplements with 5-htp:

DLPA
Glutamine
Tyrosine

Take 100 mg of 5-htp each day, with one dose of the others together.. I would take it at night, because it makes you sleepy.

You need to take DLPA with pantholinic acid (sp ?, is one of the b complex) to kane it effective.

that's great! good to know such a natural remedy can have such big effects even if they aren't benificial. Hopefully it can actually work for depression. I plan to try it soon.

I have taken 5-htp before, three 100 mg tablets a day if I remember right. I think it gave me energy, and I think a couple days after starting to take me I almost got a minor "high"... could be coincidence though because I do go through up times....
About the paralysis... I didn't have this in connection with 5-htp, but I have had it. Whe I was about 19, I had it quite a lot, and it scared me.
