Noah - Vitamins will not treat the core symptoms of schizophrenia. They can only help your general fitness if you are lacking them. The best place to get vitamins is from food. Do not let anyone sell you expensive vitamins unless they can PROVE that they will help your condition (they can't!).

Occasionally, we get people trying to sell stuff on this board. Do not give out your email address. It will end up costing you hundreds of dollars a month, with no real effect on your disorder.

Be careful, there are many unscrupulous people in this world, who would like to get rich at the expense of people who are in pain.

A word of caution - Cam

Noah

My father has had schizophrenia for the past twenty years. The only vitamin his doctor has prescribed is vit E to treat the TD caused from years of using the older anti-psychotic medications.

He is now on a low dose of zyprexa and ativan. This has been the best medication so far for him. What medications do you take?

If you wish to share any information or ask him any questions I will be more than happy to share the info with him. (He lives with me and occassionally reads posts over my shoulder. Especially when I've asked questions regarding his meds.)

Best Wishes and please keep in touch!

Willow

I am currently taking risperdal. I have heard success stories of people who get off of these drugs and live happy lives. For Example, actor Margot Kidder managed to live medication free with schizophrenia. I think schizophrenia is a poor man's disease. I don't see rich people with it.

Noah - Margot Kidder was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, not schizophrenia. Approximately 1% of the world's population has schizophrenia. It is not a poor person's disease; it affects both rich and poor families equally. One possible reason that you may not notice that rich people with the disease, is that they can afford to hire private doctors and clinics, instead of relying upon public funding to treat their affected kin.

Very, very, very few people with schizophrenia can live a tolerable life without medication. Those that can, either have very mild symptoms or were misdiagnosed.

It is very unlikely that someone diagnosed with schizophrenia can lead a productive life without medication.

My 2¢ - Cam

Noah

Some people say that they have been cured with multi-vitamins. Diagnosis is mostly clinical with mental illness, at the onset of the illness this can be difficult to distinguish from psychological vs physical cause. Over a longer period of time it easier to match the pegs with the right holes.

Have you been diagnosed with schizphrenia or bipolar disorder?

Hi Noah.
Another reason schizophrenia may appear to blight the poor is that, as Cam says, the condition is not conducive to productivity , especially when, as is so often the case, patients are *inadequately treated*. How many CEOs do you think have schizophrenia? When I knew rather less about psychiatry than I do now (still v little) I brought up the possibility of Schizoaffective disorder with my pdoc. He liked me & said he would never put such a thing on my record (unless of course it was a rock-solid dx). For one it would bar me from many avenues of employment and also, were I ever to get in trouble (likely with my inner rage) it would most definitely count against me.

People are scared by mental illness generally, and particularly of schiz. The fact is people with yr condition (assuming you've been dx'd correctly) suffer massive discrimination. Especially in the jobs mkt. Hence poor man syndrome.

Please don't fall for the 'natural' cure line. I've wasted too much money on various vitamins & supplements for depression. If it sounds too good to be true it most probably is. Good luck,
J.

Treatment for schizophrenia

HI- My sister is very ill with what I believe is SCHIZOPHRENIA. Her diagnosis used to be schizo-affective bi-polar. She has both pos and neg symptoms, the biggest being constant chatter of voice, constant talking/muttering to them, and paranoia. She lives in Salt Lake City. She is a beautiful girl - 43, a gifted brilliant artist. It is so sad to see her deterioration. It breaks my heart.
I am here now and she is off meds(for like a year ). She has been violent with me and rages and then can be very sweet. I AM AT A LOSS AS TO HOW TO GET HER THE TREATMENT SHE NEEDS. Is anyone in UTAH and know how to get around the laws that protect very ill people whae what they really NEED is to be hospitalized. It's the only way to stabilize them if they are refusing meds. I finally see that my sister is crazy and it is so sad and so much more than our family knows how to handle.
I have always been protective of my sister's dignity and rights but at this point....I don't care WHAT it takes - she needs to be in the hospital so that she can have a chance for those meds to kick in, in a CONTROLLED environment until she is well enough to begin to step back gradually into life
Also, what is the best psychiatric hospital in the US?
What is the latest and best drug?
I need a miracle.
PLEASE...your thoughts and experience, doc or patients.
Thanks
MAGEE
