Zoloft causing Acne?

Posted by Jackster on June 2, 2001, at 17:25:43

I've been on Zoloft 50mg for the last 3 weeks and have been having break outs for the last couple of weeks. Has anyone else experienced this and does it go away?

Off-topic. One researcher found that paroxetine restored facial features and thus made the patient more social:

zoloft made me break out alot...i have been struggling with acne though, for 5 yrs...went on accutane twice and made me depressed....ever since then been on antidepressant meds. alot of them made me break out....serzone and effexor were the worst offendors as well as lithium and wellbutrin but all the ssri's made my skin worse also....only meds that didnt were neurontin, gabatril, topimax and lamictal. lamictal can be used for unipolar depression, but the latter three are usually used for mood stabolization. hope this helps...good luck...jodi

I too have struggled with acne - but found that Paxil seemed to help clear it up as Sal mentions in her post above. Have you tried it? I was on it for 3 years, but when I stopped and started it again it pooped out.

Thanks. I was on Paxil and it did seem to help my skin. It has pooped out which is why I'm on Zoloft now.

Can you describe your experience with Gabitril (tiagabine)? Are you bipolar? I suffer from chronic bipolar depression for which I am interested in trying the newer anticonvulsants.

Thanks.

scott...
wasnt on gabatril that long to see if it really had any effect. i was on celexa at the same time and developed some kind of a rash... my doc didnt know if it was from celexa or gabatril so we stopped them both...then i think i went ahead and did e.c.t. ot something...i cant really remember. anyway...the couple of days that i did take it though i felt better...was out doing more stuff. maybe ill try it again...the only other anticonvulsant i can really tolerate is neurontin. that helps with my anxiety and sleep. topimax makes me nearly retarded mentally and lamictal gave me a rash and made me agitated...hope this helps...good luck...jodi

Hi Jodi.

Thanks for responding to my question.

I am upset to read that you consider your case hopeless. I hope you find Psycho-Babble helpful. There are quite a few people here who are in situations similar to yours. It is likely that you will find treatment alternatives that have not yet been considered for your case. For any treatment not yet tried lies hope. I need to convince myself of that from time to time.

> wasnt on gabatril that long to see if it really had any effect. i was on celexa at the same time and developed some kind of a rash... my doc didnt know if it was from celexa or gabatril so we stopped them both...

> then i think i went ahead and did e.c.t. ot something...i cant really remember.

If this weren't so serious, your last sentence would make for good humor. :-)

> anyway...the couple of days that i did take it though i felt better...

This sounds interesting.

> was out doing more stuff.

This is significant.

> maybe ill try it again...

If you do, I will be anxious to know how you do with it. I have Gabitril on my list of things to try. By the way, what are you being treated for? I am being treated for depression associated with bipolar disorder.

> the only other anticonvulsant i can really tolerate is neurontin. that helps with my anxiety and sleep. topimax makes me nearly retarded mentally and lamictal gave me a rash and made me agitated...

Have you tried taking Zyprexa? I have had some success with it when adding it to antidepressants. It might be worth trying even without antidepressants. It would probably help with anxiety and sleep, and may even ease the depression. You might want to consider going back and using any drugs that were partially effective in combination.

> hope this helps...

It has. I am hopeful that the brief mild improvement you experienced while you were taking Gabitril was in part because of it.

> good luck...jodi

You too...Scott

:-)

I had a similar experience. Was on Paxil for a year - was doing terrific, then it just pooped out. The last med my doc prescribed was Zoloft, which I had to stop taking because of rash on face, chest and arms, and severe swelling of the face. Have also tried Prozac, Effexor and Lexapro, but nothing compares to Paxil (when it was working).
