dr. bob - please answer my question

Posted by avoet on April 1, 2001, at 15:36:00

I have uncontrollable ruminating thoughts and obsessions. Mostly about my husband and his ex-girlfriends. Do you think Geodon will help? I am on risperidal and seem to keep obsessing. Is Geodon the new zyprexia? I need help! I am miserable.
Thanks

First off, I know exactly what you are experiencing.

I would give SSRIs and Tricylcics a better chance of helping you than an atypical antipsychotic. Actually, have you looked at Anafranil or Luvox? I think those have the most chance of helping you, considering they are approved specifically for obsessions.

Your condition WILL go away with antidepressant usage. I guarantee it (I used to wonder about who my girlfriends fucked too...now on Depakote/pindolol I could care less.)

I also understand. From a different experience, Topamax took care of it for me.

Good luck.

When I was younger... I used to be bothered by the same obsessions.
But what changed for me was age and experience, and distractions like children, mortgages, more bills and things like that.

I don't mean to minimize your obsession, but this type of obsession does seem to go away as you get older and as you get more secure in your relationship.

thanks for the input, i did not think you were minimizing my obsessions. i am encouraged to hear that yours went away. how many children do you have?

I have two children, a fulltime job, pets and a lot of dirty laundry (literally) so I no longer have time to think about my husbands former wife and girlfriends :)

I need to clarify something

Amanda.
After I posted here, I read your posts below and realized that you have been diagnosed with OCD.
So any comments I made about "outgrowing" your obsessions, or counting on kids and other distractions to reduce your obsession is not practical advice.
When i posted originally, I was just reflecting on my own obsessions which were based more on being young and insecure (which I feel now I have outgrown), as opposed to having bonafide OCD.

So I do apologize for not completely understanding, and I do hope that your new meds offer you complete recovery from your nightmare, so you can begin to truly enjoy your marriage and your life.
