Could Wellbutrin cause me to be short tempered and will it go away? I have only been on this med for 4 days 150SR twice daily. I can tell it has changed me from a sad person to a angry person. Any one else have this reaction? Should I stay with it or stop.

Hi Lynne,
Wellbutrin is known to cause irritability in some people. If it doesn't go away after 2 weeks or so, it is likely it won't diminish over time, unfortunately. However, if it does help your depression and you wish to keep taking it, the irritability may be lessened by adding either a mood stabilizer or a beta-blocker. If you are taking any other meds that increase noradrenaline, it can increase your chances for getting irritability.
I tried Wellbutrin twice and couldn't tolerate it due to the irritability. I also had the same problem with Modafinil. What other meds have you tried, and how severe is the anger?

I also have Seroquel that I have used in the past at a low doseage. Do you think it might work with the Wellbutrin better than the sleep meds listed above?

Lynne, if you take these meds for sleep only occasionally, I don't think they'd affect the irritability much. However, if you were to take Seroquel every night for sleep, it might help with the irritability. But talk to your doc before trying things out -- he or she would know the best med for you to try.
Scott, yes I do think Neurontin could be helpful for irritability, tho the classic anticonvulsants and the beta blockers have a proven track record so they might be the ones to try first.

4 days at 300 mg/day? No gradual increase? Seems extreme. But I will say that WB made me EXTREMELY irritable, but only when my dosage fluctuated substantially -- i.e., when I first start using it, I was hostile as heck, which went completely away after a few weeks. Then, however, if I missed a does or two, I would get irritable a day or two later, which would then go away in another day or two. When I stopped using WB, I was irritable as heck while I was reducing my dosage until I was completely done. But otherwise, it was great--I'd suggest sticking with it and just warning your intimates that you might be unreasonable for a while, but to give it some time -- to avoid the libido problems with other drugs, I'd say its worth giving it another week or two.

I take Wellbutrin SR 200mg 2x/day. Every time my dose was increased I got irritable for a couple of weeks. I cut out caffeine completely, which helped stop the racing mind and the jitters/shakes/tremor. I now also take Neurontin (200mg/morning; 600mg at night for sleep), which I **think** is helping. I have felt lighter and freer lately or in the last few weeks, although this last week has been a bear.
You might try lowering your dose and increasing more gradually. However, you may notice an increase in irritability every time the dose is upped.
The nice thing(s) about Wellbutrin and Neurontin are that Wellbutrin can cause weight loss and Neurontin does not cause weight gain -- a real plus for someone like me who gained weight on Remeron and lithium and couldn't take it off. It's finally coming off now. I can wear clothes that haven't fit for two years. :)

Thanks for all the answers to my post. I have been on Wellbutrin for about 10 days now and I am feeling the anxiety a little less. This med seems to make me tired. But I can't sleep at night. Has anyone used this med with Prozac? Does it give you energy?

It will give you energy for awhile but that wears off. When it wears off, that means it's really begun to start working. Don't give up when your increased energy level goes away. It's not the drug pooping out. There is an egroups site on Wellbutrin that should have info on Prozac.

Hi,
I've just read all this thread about wellbutrin. And i'm very anxious now, because i've seen that no one is taking wellbutrin 300mg + Ritalin SR 20mg like me. I wonder if this combo could be dangerous. I just started with it and i fell sick.

hi there, I am having the same reaction, I am on 150 a day only to counter the sexual side effects of paxil, I take it on the weekends only for this problem, and have to say it brings on hostility for me too, even at this small dose.... so you are not the only one!!annie
