Familiar surroundings seem unfamiliar....

Posted by Greg on April 1, 2000, at 10:16:25

I've been in what I call a "brain fog" for about 8 weeks now. About 6 week ago my surroundings started to seem surrealistic, like they weren't real. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is there anything to do about it? I'd appreciate your feedback.I currently take ADs and AAs which are being changed constantly trying to find the right mix for me. Everone have a great April!

Yes, I have experienced the very same thing, and AD's seem to make it worse for me. I have not found anything to help at all, although the search continues. I can feel perfectly fine, but I can not bring the world around me into sharp focus. It's like if I had a tuner button, like on a radio, I could tune in a little better. Some have told me it sounds like ADD, but I'm not convinced. No words of wisdom here, but at least you know you're not alone. ~Sherry

What are you are describing is sometimes called derealization and sometimes dissociation. Although it is often associated with incipient schizophrenia--don't let this freak you out--, it can be caused by many things. Stimulants can definitely cause what you describe, but so can ADs, marijuana, and other drugs. I think the first thing to do is to try and determine if one of the drugs you are taking is causing the derealization. If you are taking marijuana or stimulants I would stop them.

This sounds like derealization. Read up on that and maybe depersonalization also.

Agree with the above, about derealization and depersonalization. It can also be caused by stress. I've felt it for about four days now, waiting for a needle breast biopsy (tomorrow). It doesn't necessarily mean you're nuts (although I'm sure with sufficient stress, any of us could get there!).

James,
Good to hear from you! My doc says I have Clinical Depression, but I think it goes deeper than that. I had major back surgery in 97 and was on Fentanyl (Synthetic Morphine) for over a year. After detoxing I went into deep fits of depression, aches and pains, unable to sleep, no energy, etc. Anxiety and panic attacks have joined the list. I currently take Wellbutrin, Xanex, Remeron, Ambien and Neurontin. I'm starting to get my strength back but can't get this fog to lift. I first came to Babble about 6 months ago and some advice you gave me was a godsend! I appreciate the opportunity to talk to you again. I'm going in for a Stress Echo test on Wed and I understand that you have one scheduled for the end of May. I wish us both the best of luck! Sooooo.... what do you think?

James here...

I remember you. Congrats on detox. It is not the uncommon after detox to have mood or sometimes thought disterbance for a while. When mood is controled by powerful drugs and high doses it may
run wild for a while. Some start to feel loss from reality. There is a very effective treatment, an anti-psychotic. Many AP's are also AD's so you may be able to drop some other meds. The good news is you will get over this. Short term AP's are very safe. It is best to not let this thought pattern go unchecked, it will get worse. Report this to your doc, he/she will know what to do. I would suspect that your recient operation and the fact that you are still healing has a lot to do with this. Let us know how things are doing. Good to hear from you again.
