OK to Take Entire BuSpar Dose at Bedtime?

Posted by David Mirtzer on November 19, 1999, at 13:57:54

Does anyone know whether BuSpar (30mg in my case) can all be taken at bedtime, and still provide some effect throughout the day? I know that's it's normally supposed to be taken two or three times a day.

I ask this because BuSpar still makes me very sleepy (even at doses as small as 7.5mg), after six weeks.

On a related note, if the fatigue side-effect remains after six weeks, it's not going to go away, is it?

Thanks in advance.

I dunno David. That's a good question. Buspar's half life is fairly short, just a few hours. But other short half life meds, like Serzone, seem to work just as well taken once nightly instead of bid or tid. According to anecdotal and clinical evidence anyway. Buspar's metabolite has considerable pharmacological action in the body and may contribute to its efficacy. I don't know if anyone knows for sure how its metabolite contributes to the overall picture. But Buspar's metabolite is actually stronger than the parent compound, has a different action, and a much longer half life. So maybe once-nightly dosing stands a chance of working.

I think you know though that the only real way to answer your question is to try it and see. Even if it had worked with someone else, there would be no way to predict it would work with you too. Right? Just gotta try it and see. If someone was at a higher dose, say maybe 60mg or 90mg, they would be taking your dose all at once two or three times a day. So it should be a safe experiment to try. I would think those fatique side effects would have diminished after 6 weeks. But they haven't, huh? If the side effects are still with you in another 2 to 4 weeks, then I think it would be a safe assumption that they aren't going to go away. Hmmm, I dunno know. That's a tough one too. You ask some tough questions! :)

Thanks JohnL! Tough questions, perhaps, but I think you've come up with some great thoughts. I'm going to suggest to my pdoc that I "give it a whirl". By the way, BuSpar-induced tinnitus has stayed with me full force for six weeks, too.

Tinnitus? So I'm NOT the only one after all. I've tried Buspar several times. But each time only lasts a day or two because the tinnitus is LLOOUUDD. Like a jet engine in my head. Later I think it was just my imagination, so I try it again, and there it is. The tinnitus really intensifies with Buspar.

I'm pretty sure that tinnitus is not going away. Based on everything you said so far--the fatigue, the tinnitus, six weeks--either Buspar is doomed or you'll need yet more drugs to deal with those side effects. Not worth it. I don't think the future of Buspar with you looks very encouraging at this point. Sorry, wish I had something more upbeat to say about Buspar.
