Sigismund/Anyone - comments on weather talk?

Posted by Kath on September 30, 2009, at 20:15:33

Hey Dec, In another post, talking about accents in England, Manic said that for:

>"I say old boy isn't the weather horrid"

Manic would say:
"heyup buddy aint the weather piss poor."

So, what would you say in Australia?

In Ontario, Canada, I might say,
"What an awful day" or
"Jeez, what crummy weather" or if I'm talking with my son, I might joke, "Yo, nasty day, eh?"

I know Canadians get teased about saying 'eh?' but I don't really know people who say it much unless they're joking. Well, I might say something like, "Awful weather, eh?"

Comments from other locations most welcome

Kath

"It's hot."

"I can't believe how hot it is."

"The a/c isn't working!!!"

"Oh h*ll, the streets are flooded."

"They're telling us to prepare for an evacuation."

Other than that, not much to complain about. Most likely...

"It's so beautiful out. I wish I didn't have to work."

But from May to October, some variation on hot.

Hi Kath

I've always enjoyed the way Americans say 'horrid'.

The only Australians I can recall saying that are from my grandparents generation.

What we say here, with only a small amount of irony is
'This is the end of the world', along with various expletives

Of course you might feel that this is the overflow of a politically overheated imagination, so I give you a picture of last week's

http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200712/r213693_825388.jpg

The weather is not a safe subject in Australia, perhaps like Canada? (so much stupid snow!)

My son brought a Canadian girl to stay for a couple of days: It is lovely having young people around.
One of the better things about getting older is that you appreciate the beauty of youth, which was certainly wasted on me back then.

I'm in the process of reading an article from the New York Times about the events in Memorial Hospital (I think) during the flooding of NO.

Just astonishing.

An old friend just came back from Canada and the US and remarked on how it felt to be among people who considered themselves citizens, and somehow she joined this up with the idea of courtesy....how when she dropped something a young black man picked it up for her and gave it to her with a smile and a direct look.

Let's see, I usually say, "OMG, does this weather suck or what"? But if you want to get really Texan, "Looks like there's a storm a brewing!" Or even better, "Looks like its fixin to come a downpour"! I used to work with a girl who said the last one, and we all made fun of her for it. Its like something your Grandma would say. A little more the norm would be "Its fixin to let loose out there!" Of course TX is a huge state so there's all kinds of variations.

Well, in the great Pacific Northwest, where I have only lived for 17 months, so I'm hardly an expert, I think it's like this:

"It's gonna rain."

"It's raining."

"It just got done raining."

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

And...

"Is it raining again?"

"When was that last sunny day....I forget...a week ago? Two weeks..?"

The coolest thing is we have "sunbreaks" here! They will tell you throughout the day when you should expect one, I think so you can go outside and feel the sun on your skin - quick! - before the clouds move back in!!

I have lived in two other countries, and eight different U.S. states, and this is the first time I've heard the radio/TV weather folks forecasting sunbreaks. At first it seemed weird, almost silly...now I think I get why they sound so excited about it..

(ha, ha, it started suddenly raining hard while I was typing this....1:46 am PST...well, it does sound nice on the carports outside my window, I do like that sound to go to sleep to...)

-- 10der, in the vicinity of Portland OR
Average rainfall per year: 151 days

Of course, really, we don't beat out anyone.

http://www.met.utah.edu/jhorel/html/wx/climate/daysrain.html

Look at Pittsburgh, Burlington VT, places in Michigan, Alaska, West Virginia, etc., etc.

And no one has a thing on Hawaii, naturally...

Here, so far I think it's the consecutive days - the most I have counted once was 12...that makes it "seem" like it "rains all the time."

But according to this chart, 151 days ain't nothing, really.

~ It seems a constant topic here. Many many conversations begin with a comment on the weather...bank teller conversations, store cashier conversations etc etc. We seem sorta obsessed with it. So we might not like it, but we sure seem to comment on it! At least where I live - it might not be an across-country thing.

That's interesting.

The further south you go on the west coast the drier it gets?

No, they weren't sand so much as dust, blown from around Lake Eyre in the central south.

I'm uncertain as to the role our farming practices have played.
The Australian soil is generally ill-suited to cloven hoofed animals which break the salt crust.
The native ones hop and don't disturb it.

Yes, absolutely, overall anyway. Southern California is a desert climate.....drainage is a problem, as when it rains hard (and it does, in my memory, during Jan and Feb and maybe December once in a while and that's mostly it).... there is routinely minor, and sometimes major, flooding as the hard packed, sandy-type soil doesn't really absorb much...

Though California, being so large, has some subclimates, I think, so maybe San Francisco, etc., has average to high rainy days. I think different pictures are painted depending on whether you look at # of days a year or average inches of rain...frequency vs. quanity, or something like that....here seems we have a good dose of both.

BTW, it's raining :-) But the sun is also out, so...go figure!!

We humans can sure mess things up.

A few years ago, SOMEone in Ontario had the brilliant idea to import a different kind of "ladybug" from our 'native' ones, in order to eat pest-bugs I guess.
They multiplied like MAD. There were hundreds of them all over and they BIT - (ours don't) and it HURT!! I guess they died out over the winter.

That dust is sure impressive! cough cough.

With that Canadian in the house I understood why some of you write 'probably' as 'prolly', but I'm still uncertain about 'thots'.
(I had to concentrate on what she was saying so as not to ask for too many repeats.)
We say 'hey?' all the time, prolly desperately seeking reassurance.
We also often say 'yes no' together as a sign of our fair mindedness or our proximity to collapse.

~ I realize that I say 'probly' or 'probuly' - never thot of it before....do you mean that kind of thought? I pronounce thought 'thot' - how else would it be said? Or are you referring to a diff kind of 'thot'??

> (I had to concentrate on what she was saying so as not to ask for too many repeats.)

~ I am astonished! I didn't think we had a hard-for-an-Aussie-to-understand accent!? Did she speak quickly? I find this fascinating.

> We say 'hey?' all the time, prolly desperately seeking reassurance.

~ A lot of people I know say 'ya know?' a lot through their speaking...probly desperately seeking reassurance ;-)

~ So Siggie - give me a sentence as an example puleez.
