> (((((LL)))))Yeah, I decided to get out. my roommate arrived back in the room and I felt like getting some fresh air. I went to the concierge desk and asked for directions to the bakery. Then I ate my snack, and went to more dumb lectures. One was so dumb, we were actually laughing about it. I wish I could describe it more in depth. It was a scientific presentation about this theory. the guy presented a theory, and then provided 3 lines of evidence. For each line of evidence, I was pretty convinced that he had completely failed to support the theory. Then at the end of the talk, I fully expected him to say "based on the evidence I presented, I would like to completely disregard above theory, and instead propose a new theory"
instead
"as you can see (from my 12 point font at 100 feet distance) I found strong evidence in favor of the original theory... [groan]..."

yeah. lonely with lots of people around. even lots of smart nice funny people. I'm not sure that there's any *one* person who could pull me out of this funk. dunno what started it. oh well.
> I can understand, though, if you're traveling alone how it can get to you all at once. Maybe the initial new place experience has worn off and then what? Maybe you can turn it into a nice self-care day? You can stay in the room, but order room service, a movie, and take a long bath. Oh, and don't forget to jump on the bed a little. :)room service too expensive. jumping on the bed is an interesting idea. how about if i jump on my boss's bed instead. (then I would feel guilty).

Good point about the food. maybe it's because I'm eating on a different schedule. dinner at 7pm here is almost my bedtime at home.
Maybe I better test your hypothesis by finding some korean food for tonight.

yeah, you were right. I did feel better getting out of the room. and perhaps it's because I just got too excited and tried to do too much yesterday. I should have had a goal today. Like "visit Stanley Park"
Haven't been in a single meeting/lecture that was truly monumental. Usually at these things there's something where I just feel like "WOW". I haven't gotten the wow feeling yet. just a feeling like, "these are the best people in my field, and this is the best they can come up with? is this mediocrity going to be me in 20 years?"
I'm asking myself if there's anything here that is even worth me thinking about? why does it matter? Why am I in this field?
oh well. time to go back and join the troops. but first I have a little update. please read below.

I asked the hotel concierge for the directions to the bakery. took a walk there. observed the differences in people, attitudes, demographics, lifestyles. It's so subtle, but still prominent.
I bought a half-dozen buttertarts. yep that's right. I ate one already. it was rich, and ever so slightly syrupy in the middle. I have to say that the version that I made at home has the correct flavor profile. I need to work on achieving the syrupy quality too, but Larry Hoover gave me tips on that a while back. prebake the tart shells and don't cook the filling until it boils.
I don't know if I will be able to leave the room again. next lecture is in 5 minutes. famous person, but so far the famous ones have been awfully disappointing...

still haven't had the slurpee, hopefully tomorrow.
Cherry flavored, of course.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling the energy that you've had recently. Sometimes we just need to take a breath. Don't assume that you are going down into the deep dark hole. Just take each day as it is. Try to do a little bit of something. And look for the good signs as well as the bad ones.
I hope you find an inspiring lecture to go to!

((((((((((((you))))))))))))
I know what you mean about feeling lonely or whatever & interpretting it as: DEPRESSION
I get so scared of being in a depression again if I feel badly that it's almost enough to put me there!
You mentioned a list of things that mite contribute to how you're feeling. It could be all or any combination of them that are contributing to your feeling down.
I think being alone in a strange place among strangers is a VERY stressful situation!!!!!
Or can be.Please be gentle with yourself. It's not at all unusual in my opinion, that you could be feeling lonely or down. Just try to relax about it, okay? Please try not to interpret it as depression, because I suspect it isn't.
((((((((((((Lurp)))))))))))
NOW - as to slurpees. This will be gross, but you need to know this.
I'm in Ontario & they have Slushies here. I'm not sure if Slurpees are the same. I am sorry to have to tell you that recently (probably a few months ago) a new flavour came out. This is sooooooooo gross. I first learned of it while at a movie. There was an ad for it on the huge movie screen - a very graphic ad. The new flavour is "Bloody Zit". It showed a teenage boy with lots of pimples (zits) on his face. It was the most revolting ad & I CAN'T imagine WHY a company would make a drink & call it THAT, can you????!!!!!!
I asked the man at our local Mac's Milk store - "Do people really buy that flavour!!!????" He rolled his eyes & said, "Yup. Believe it or not they do." We both came to the conclusion that kids around 12 or 13 (& for some reason especially boys) seem to delight in grossing everyone out!!!
I say LIME every time!!!!!!
Hope you're feeling better soon hun.
luv, Kath
Oh - PS - I highly recommend Tim Horton's steeped tea. I don't know what Timmie puts in it, but I think it's highly addictive! (Well, Timmie himself is dead, but maybe his ghost is involved, I dunno). Anyway, several people who are somewhat "addicted" to Timmie's steeped tea, including myself swear that they put something in it! One person came up with the idea that maybe they line the cups with something addictive & in that way get away with it!!

Aww Kath, that was SOOO sweet of you to post that :)
Notice above smiley face. I am feeling better. I went to a really nice lecture that was inspiring. And then I found one of the 3 people I know from my work and we had drinks. I had 2 champagnes and a cocktail. now my cheeks are hot and I'm feeling merry. I even got a chance to show off my newfound psychopharmacology knowledge and an invitation to go out drinking later on tonight, so I'm not a total loser.
thanks for hugs, and making me smile about bloody zit flavored drinks. [barf!]
Anyways, it's not depression until it's been like that for 2 weeks or so. since I've been feeling better for 14 days in a row, I can't let a bad day convince me to order a straightjacket now, can I?
haven't seen horton's yet. I have seen Blendz. this seems to me to be a direct imitation of Starbucks, albeit with a greater emphasis on teas.

Guess you've been advised about the proper cuisine of Vancouver, about which I have no special info.
I will say though, that I just got a huge piece of really great chocolate cake, which I plan to eat over the next few days. From Dean and Deluca.
Since chocolate cake is one of the major food groups, you ought to get some, as you don't want to neglect basic nutrition while on the cherry coke and buttertart diet.
Is your mood at all improved? I think you're lonely, myself. and probably slightly cake-deprived. Nothing that won't get better, esp. when you get back home (and get the cake).

Jost. you have just found a new calling. Alternative medicine e-therapist. mood is about 63% better. also perhaps due to 2 champagnes and 1 nice cocktail and a pizza shared with friends (yes, I found a friend, or two)

Ll, look for that chocolate-cake-shaped (with large sculpted dollops of chocolate icing on top) cloud right outside your hotel. That's me, checking in. I use the cloud-mobile when I have to travel quickly to distant parts of the continent.
I'm so glad you're feeling better. Keep up the champagne and cake, and your mood should stay 63% improved for 77% of the time, + or - 8%.
Also, no depression-- everyone's allowed to be privately a bit queasy in a large unfamiliar city.
You're having such an interesting summer, though, aren't you?

Jost, no clouds in the sky today
I saw an art exhibit on Haita art. that's native American art from the west coast of canada. Think- totem poles and ceremonial masks. I had no idea that the culture was so profoundly artistic. Really really ingenious woodworking techniques. Ingenuity and beauty and functionality. The hallmarks of brilliant design.
Went to a few nice lectures. Gave my presentation. (went well). Ate sockeye salmon, grilled medium rare (spectacular).
Walked 4 miles around the big park and took a trolley the rest of the way.
all in all, a day full of omega-3 fatty acids, exercise and pleasant chatter. no time to feel down.
__________
yes, Jost, a very interesting summer. My dissertation advisor seems to agree with the fact that I should take a little time off. Says we Americans work too hard, and for what?
-ll
p.s. today I switched from Champagne and cake to white wine (2 glasses) and salmon (sushi lunch and grilled dinner)toodles. see you next time you hop on the cloud-mobile. I'll give you a wink, but don't you dare rain on me unless it's warm and I'm happy!

You're getting way too healthy out there, Ll. Is that good weather going to your head?
Too much omega-3, culture and walking!
brrrrrr.
Seriously, though, I've read about the tribes of the Northwest US, probably going up into Canada. They had the most intense rituals, and great art. I haven't heard of Haita, but was very interested in the Kwakiutl. How did the presentation go? Part of your dissertation? Must have been successful-- and a terrific learning experience.

>presentation went well. got good feedback, nobody found any fatal flaws in my study. I was hoping this one guy would come stop by and talk with me, because I have some issues with his work, and can show him my data that speaks to certain assumptions he has about the way the world works. But... he didn't make it. oh well... Oh yeah, and I drank a glass of nice white wine too, while I was chatting with people after my presentation.

Are you still there for a while? Can't remember.
What's the weather like? (Visions of son & GF sleeping in the park pop through my mind & I successfully shoo them away!)
Sounds like you're having a pretty good time now.

thanks for congrats. This presentation was pretty easy, because I'm confident in my data and I know that my project is pretty new, so it's not like I'm trying to argue that Einstein was all wrong or something. I'm just breaking new ground, rather than refuting existing theories.
Kath, the weather while we were there was GORGEOUS. a little cool at night (high 50s?0 and about 75 and sunny during the day. They had fireworks too for some kind of international fireworks thingy. throngs of well-behaved people. "everyone be polite please" was what the police and security folks were saying as we crushed through the downtown to get back to our hotel. Didn't see the fireworks, but went to eat salmon instead.
Thank GOD I had the buttertarts. I didn't have time to buy food in my 20 minute connection between the international terminal and the domestic flight at LAX. got so lost. had to cut through lines of people who were waiting for security screening. I kept my cool. annoying woman behind me is freaking out and saying. We have a flight at 1:30 it's really important. do you mind if I ? ... in her urgent panicky voice. I calmly said "i have a flight at 12:55, so i have priority, but I'll try to be as fast as possible. and was assertive in placing my stuff in front of her stuff on the security scan conveyor belt.
got a meeting now!

yes, sadly I had to leave Vancouver and go back to the real world. In the real world I don't have a maid making my bed everyday. In the real world there isn't coffee and tea served promptly at 10 and 15 oclock daily. In the real world I have to use money that looks like money to me. In the real world I don't wear a nametag all day long and wonder who I might run into in the elevator.
