Why why why do I do it?

Posted by Dinah on December 14, 2005, at 10:21:00

I ate so much homemade chili last night that I was up half the night propped in a sitting position, and still feel sick this morning.

I even smell like chili, despite clothing changes and baths.

My husband warned me all along, and I didn't listen.

I'm never going to eat again.

Sounds like my pot roast last week. It tasted really good, and for once I made a "real" meal. But it wasn't happy intestinal time afterwards. And I threw the rest of it away today because I don't dare put it in my stomach.

Sigh. It really did taste good...

Well, it's either that or you could invite me over next time. I can eat vast quantities of homemade chili. We could compete to see who can scoff the most! Best case scenario: we eat half as much as we otherwise would... (possibly still too much...)

I don't know about you, but I find food (especially spicy food) very comforting. If I'm having a particularly hard day I eat compulsively: I buy a big box of crackers and I don't stop eating until they're all gone.

I do it most often when I'm anxious or under pressure. I use to smoke compulsively too until I quit. Seems to be an oral thing.

Since I can rarely identify the *feeling* of anxiety, I usually figure out I'm anxious by my compulsive behaviour.

But that's just me...

I woke up 'quickly' two nights ago with some kind of acid reflux deal. It felt like it went down the wrong pipe and gagged me to the point I couldn't catch my breath between coughs. It was actually kinda scary.
I didn't have chili that day but something set it off.

When I eat pizza I bloat up like an 8 month pregnant woman, and pretty much stay that way for 2 days (lactose intolerance I think). Not to mention the gas emissions from both ends of my GI tract. Yet... now and then... I just have to eat a pizza. And it ends up being a whole pizza, since I've been pizza-deprived for so long. Not exactly smart. But yummy!

Don't mean to alarm you, but you could have silent reflux (the kind that doesn't wake you), which can be causing problems. Asthma, changes in the esophagus....I'd at least bring it up with my doctor next time you're in.

Oh, I bet you will.

Once in a while, when I binge, and that whole mysterious "why" floats around me, I also take the time to acknowledge that it worked. Whatever the why, the binge fixed the why. So, when it's an occasional thing, I just don't trouble myself with figuring it out.

Hope you feel better soon.

Larry, I've just added Wellbutrin to my combo. Think it could be related?

Not likely. There's a very small increase in dyspepsia, compared to placebo, but no reference to reflux or heartburn. No Pubmed reports of reflux.

It happens to me rather alarmingly often. Including last night. I only find elevating my head and torso a bit helps. When I was on Luvox it was so bad that we put bricks under the head of the bed.

None of my doctors seem concerned though.

Any possibility of tasty cheese substitutes? (grin)

Because I scarfed down the remainder as a late lunch/early dinner. Fortunately there wasn't much left.

I think maybe it was just severe chili deprivation. My son doesn't like it so I rarely make it. But I decided the other day not to let that stop me. My son doesn't like hardly anything, my husband doesn't like wine or mushrooms, and all my favorite things to cook seem to contain one or more things that someone hates.

So I'll cook boring food most of the time, and serve side plates for them to pick out the stuff they don't like when I cook for me. :)

Chili and strogonoff and goulash and brucciolona (sp?) all remind me of home, where I did the family cooking from my early teens.

Next time I'll be happy to share with you, Tamar. :)

Huh! They should be grateful you’re not cooking cockroach pie.

Oh yum yum yum. Will you be my sister?

Hey Dinah where are you from? I know where you live now but where is the chili, mushrooms, wine from? Fondly, Phillipa

My grocery store isn't that sophisticated. They have the cheeseless kind, but it just isn't appealing. Sometimes I wonder if it's maybe all the bread, along with the cheese, that's the problem. I'm usually OK with sandwich cheese. It's probably the the exact combo of ingredients that makes pizza delicious that causes the problem.

I'm glad you survived to eat chili again!

Dinah,

I suggest charcoal capsules. They absorb a lot of "stuff" -- gas, acid, etc. and work quickly and well. I like them so much better than anything else for overeating/gastro stuff I've ever tried.

I've got a really sensitive stomach so I avoid most spicy foods. (Probably why cymbalta is still bugging me.) I think I've tried every home made remedy ever suggested.

I'm glad you feel better.

Just my father's taste in food, I guess. There were so many things he didn't like to eat, that my early cooking experiences were shaped by what he did like to eat.

Thanks Daisy. I'll give it a try. (nm) » daisym
