Can I introduce to you my (half) brother who lives in Milan??
I remember being a young (17) impressionable little sister visiting him in Manchester and going down Canal Street and thinking it didn't get much cooler than that!! LOL!!!!!!!

Hi Meri

Canal Street can be fun - while under the influence of a hefty quantity of alcohol! I'm not really a 'bars and clubs' person to be honest. Too sl*tty, too b*tchy and far too noisy, especially in 'Essentials' or whatever it's called. The vulgarity of it all can be depressing. People are 'high' but is anyone actually happy? In future, I think I'd need to be on Ecstasy to enjoy clubbing. Not that I'm planning on going clubbing. Alcohol just doesn't do it for me anymore.........or maybe at the ripe old age of 21 I've turned into a boring old f*rt ;-) Still, Canal Street is not all it's cracked up to be. I guess it *can* be exciting though. I haven't been for months, perhaps I should go. There's always a sad element though........the homeless people, numerous 'lonely old men' wondering around, a depressed drag queen, 'dubious' people who hang around public toilets, prostitutes.... Geez, how depressing. I don't like the word 'gay' because of all the negative associations. I think.... 'I'm not like that'. I guess I just want to settle down with a nice man some day, ya know? I'm lonely at the moment. Well... sometimes.

And seriously, what's with all these 'lets have sex with as many people as possible' people? I don't get it. I don't like sleaze. Paradoxically, I find sleaze very un-sexy. Looks like men need women to keep their libidos in check. Men need women to tell them 'no'. 'No' doesn't seem to be in some men's vocabularies though.

Rant over.

Love

Ed

Hehehe, well said Ed! Hmmm yeah Canal street when I was 17 was pretty funny.....coming from Smalltownsville (and being a straightish girl) it really opened my eyes! LOL....but yes, now I think it would be not to my liking, now that I have travelled the world!! Hehehe.

There's alot to be said for settling down....and doing boring stuff!!

This is very off-topic for the Meds board, but it's a lot more pleasant than many other discussions around here, so I'll add my own perspective. I'm not gay, but find gay bars to be a lot more tolerable than 'straight' ones.

Half an eccie, a couple of decent cocktails and Canal Street would be OK. You don't have to DO anything, cruise around for a bit, go home, have a joint, snuggle up.

Many, many years ago I was sitting in the chill-out room at "The Fridge" a gay club in London. I was in a booth with five other strangers who were quaffing water and getting their heads together. Three women, three men.
woman1: "I think it's great that you guys have such a warm community here. It's much friendlier than teh striaght clubs I go to. Are you 'out' at work?"
me: Um er - I'm straight. I'm hear for the dancing and keeping my mate company.
man2: um I'm straight too. I'm here for the drugs.
woman2: I'm not.
man 3: IYou won't believe it - I'm straight too. Maybe this isn't a really a gay bar?
woman1: stares at everyone as if they had just deflated her balloon, gets up and walks off with a pout.
remaining five: all collapse in laughter

Yes!

Over here (at least)
techno / dance / trance music hit the gay bars way before it hit mainstream.
And made decent use of strobe lighting
(Before they had to tone it down because of the seizure issue...)
I used to go clubbing with one of my mates when I was about 16.
They would let us in because it was a gay bar, my friend was gay, and it used to be fairly much the only place gay people could socialise back then.
It was great.
Really.
Amazing to be able to go out and not be oggled by guys at all.
Some of the women were a little on the scarey side...
But it was all good really.

When I was in Canberra...
Same saga.
If you want good dance / trance music
And not to be oggled
(As a girl at any rate)
Gay bars are way better than mainstream...

I can't believe you're only 21. You are so mature and wise. The person you settle down with some day will be very lucky.

I used to go to the Fridge quite alot..

And 3 years ago I installed their CCTV system and made it wirk with their computers (with my brother who has a CCTV company).. we then did their 3 other nightclubs..

Being there during the day was certainly eye opening *L*

And yes, as a straight woman I used to prefer it as I wouldn't get hassled by men *l* (this is 8 - 12 years ago though!)

though...

i think there can be a bit of a 'meat market' going on much as there is in the mainstream clubs. i know my friend... found everybody was really very exceptionally friendly and pleasant to him to start with... he didn't appreciate that there was a little group there who compete for 'new meat'.

i think...

that in general...

if you are more interested in a meaningful relationship than a fling

(and my friend quickly discovered the former was more to his tastes)

then...

clubs aren't really the place.

but alternatives can be tricky sometimes...

You were in Canberra? I spent what felt like a hundred years there from age of 22 to 25. I can still recall the evil Private Bin, Tillys on a Saturday afternoon, living on a tree lined St in Yarralumla. It feels like a world away. Where are you today?
