Crocodile tears

Posted by wildcard on November 16, 2005, at 8:36:16

I haven't been around a lot lately as I needed a break to get things straight and now that I am feeling better, I have these huge crocodile tears from reading some of ya'lls posts and knowing how you feel and wishing so hard that I could make things better for you. Damn this illness...

I'm glad you're feeling better. You have a big heart Wildcard.

"Crocodile tears" means fake tears. From Answers.com:

"An insincere display of grief; false tears.

[From the belief that crocodiles weep either to lure a victim or when eating one.]"

I in no way at all meant *fake* anything. Here in the south where I grew up we use the phrase as meaning *big tears*! I did google it and saw the actual definition but that is not how I meant it.

I've always heard crocodile tears meant big tears cause you felt so sorry for some one. Or were very sad yourself and wished you could help other people and were unable too because you were crying so hard. Fondly, Phillipa

This is fascinating. I've lived most of my life on the West Coast. I've never heard the phrase used any other way than to mean insincere grief. Does it mean "big tears" over the entire South?

I.

I know Phillipa is from the south and she has heard it used as big tears but I honestly don't know. I know that is how I've heard it phrased in the Carolina's but I'll have to ask. I was suprised that there was only the one definition for it b/c I have never heard that! Learn something new every day ; )

and crocodiles cant even cry :-o

I just read the rest of the post. This is fascinating. I never heard that "crocodile tears' meant fake tears.

Have you ever heard the song "Ribbons and Curls"
It is a father singing about his little girl growing up. In the song he mentions crocodile tears. I think he meant big tears. It is a country song. The song writer is prob. from the South too.

love,
Lynn

Lets party then. Yesterday was my birthday. I almost lost one of my best friends. She misunderstood me and I misunderstood her. My feelings were hurt and hers were too. It was terrible. In the end, we talked and things are back to normal. What an emotional day.

I really wish that we could get together and just relax and be care free. laugh, cry, or whatever.

Hey that's not fair. I wanted to be a flower child. But I got married and had three kids. And couln't participate. The peace sign I taught to my kids and we gave peace signs to all who drove by our car. Fondly, Phillipa

I'm from New England, but have lived in the Carolinas, Florida, So Cal., South Dakota and now Illinois (if I remembered them all....thanks to the USAF) and been around people from all over the world....and I've heard both...

...big, huge sad tears in empathy for someone else
AND
....fake tears, usually referring to a child trying to gain sympathy....

Stuff like this is fascinating.

*Huge Sigh*
