I just read the rest of the post. This is fascinating. I never heard that "crocodile tears' meant fake tears.
Have you ever heard the song "Ribbons and Curls"
It is a father singing about his little girl growing up. In the song he mentions crocodile tears. I think he meant big tears. It is a country song. The song writer is prob. from the South too.
