Anyone heard of David Icke? Is he a nut?

Posted by beardedlady on May 4, 2002, at 8:55:45

Someone sent me this quote: "Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground." It was unattributed, and I think it's astute and funny, so I looked it up on the net, and I found this guy's web site. In it, he's saying, essentially, that there's an illuminati--a group that holds power over the world (that would be George Bush and his cronies, of course). In order to get us to do what they want, they create a need for it (meaning they created 9/11 so we could have a police state and war, etc.).

I don't think I can read anything further by him because his writing is semi-atrocious (he claims to be a journalist from England). Anyway, I was just wondering why I'd never heard of him and if anyone else has.

He used to be a famous English goalkeeper (that's the guy who stands in the net in Soccer) turned sports presenter. Was a pretty regular sorta guy.

Then one day he shows up on Wogan (the biggest talk show here of its time), wearing a turquoise shellsuit, proclaiming himself to be the son of God.

I'm not sure he still believes that but he does believe that our world is run by 9 foot tall, blood drinking lizard men form outer space who 'wear' human skins. I am being serious.

He's generally the subject of ridicule but is becoming something of a cult hero amongst conspiracy theorists.

He's recently fallen foul of the ADL, who perceive his constant diatribes against 'international bankers' to be anti-Semitic.

I know he's v. interested in the Bildenberg (sp?) Group. If you want a fairly objective perspective on the guy I suggest "Them: Adventures with Extremists" [Jon Ronson] which has a left-wing English journalist accompanying various extremists on their travails. Icke doesn't come across as particularly nasty or anything...just rather *misguided*.

I saw a section about religious frauds that I found interesting. But there were only four complaints against us Jews as opposed to dozens against the Catholics and the Christians. I found that to be a little refreshing. But he is, indeed, a nut. Thanks for the info.

Hardly nuts considering the crap coming from people "these days."

(O.K., I admit, I did skip the reptile section; but some of the stuff on the site is quite right on.)

Even though there are other nuts "these days," he's no less nuts because of it! Many conspiracy theorists say things that could sound pretty enticing, if only there weren't so much more proof otherwise. That the U.S. needed this war to stimulate the ecomony is hardly deniable; that we attacked the World Trade Center towers ourselves is absolutely ridiculous (though we did help train the terrorists, it's not quite what he meant).

His arguments go sort of like this: Here's a picture of the Pope. And here's a picture of Ronald McDonald. They are the same person! Here is my proof: Have you ever seen them together?

But, hey, our differences of opinion make this place interesting. So to each his own. Whatever turns you on. Whatever gets you though the night. It's all right. It's all right. (Just so long as you don't promote hatred and violence, in which case I'll have to tell everyone you're the devil and get them to beat you up!) (A funny irony, get it?)

Hi beardy,

I just got back from two baby baptisms in a Catholic church service. First time in a Catholic church. Many of my friends over the years have been Catholics, but I know diddlysquat about their religion, etc. I live in what one might call an efficient WASP nest. My parents never had any religious affiliations or requirements on us as we grew up-thank God! When it comes to "rating" religous institutions I go by music only. I liked Steinbeck's "Travels with Charlie" when he describes a Baptist church service. The best live church music I have heard was in a Promised Land, Arkansas Baptist Church service for my grandmother's funeral back in 1974.

Well, I halfway agree with him about there being a group of people who hold power over the world. I would strongly disagree with the idea that it is Bush and cronies (tho Bush was Funny at the dinner for the press last night).

Paul Simon, on Graceland, expressed what I think, and I'm writing this from memory, so the lyrics may not be exact:

the way the camera follows us in slow mo
the way we look to us all
the way we look to a distant constellation
dying in the corner of the sky
these are the days of miracle and wonder
but don't cry baby don't cry...

then later....these are the days of lasers in the jungle,
lasers in the jungle somewhere,
staccato signals of constant information
a loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires
etc

I think the people who hold power over the world are quiet and keep a low profile. A group well above and beyond Bush et al. Illuminati--I'm not so sure about that part.

I've never heard of Icke, but I would not like to have that name.

Is it a common English perception that we don't have Soccer here? Just curious since you explained what a goal keeper is! Just in case you didn't know, in physical education classes, our version of football is not played (that I know of), but soccer is; in fact, our schools have competitive teams.

I just thought that clarification was very funny and had to mention it!

Cheers! (And cheerio!)
