Hey guys,

Do any of you suffer from SAD as well as our other troubles? It's getting quite hot and sunny over here again at the mo (amazing as it's England!!!) and I'm definitely feeling better. Have to admit that I thought this SAD thing was a complete load of bollox when I first heard about it but I really wonder if I get a bit of it as well during the winter months? Maybe it was just all the health probs but it just seems a bit odd that I've suddenly lifted with the weather.

Whatever it is, I'm not complaining, I feel a bit iffy right now but a damn sight better than I have for a long time so whatever's caused it, I don't mind!!!!

Emma.

Emma, I feel like a butterfly. In the rain & gloom, it hides away. When the sun comes out, it flits from flower to flower. What a thing to tell people "hi! I've got the mentality of a butterfly!"

But I do. It's the long days & sun-filled ones (even though I hate hot weather) that do so much to make me feel good. As the years have gone by, I notice I'm becoming even more polarised in my response to day length & brightness. I still think bears have the right plan & humans have it all wrong.

I dont have SAD, but know it is a very real condition. If it *is* something relevant to you, a light box might help during the short winter days (but hire rather than buy one if you want to try it- cost quite a bit and dont make any difference if you *dont* have SAD).

It gets complicated as I think this lovely weather can cheer up everyone, not just those with SAD. See how you get on over the summer and autumn?

I know exactly what you mean! I have had the longest spell of depression I've ever had over the winter, and the other day when the sun came out I was like " oh how wonderful life is!" It is a nightmare! I dissapear into my cave again when it becomes cold or wet. I think it just goes with my cycles, but definitely has a huge impact on my mood. I know it's not terribly healthy, but a visit to the sunbeds does me a world of good when I am low.

You didn't say in your post whether your lift from the sun coming out happened every time for you - you only mentioned the other day. I know for me, a sunny day is very welcome, but I don't feel a lift until 2 or 3 days of sun. Then the lift I get will last a day or so afterwards if it turns gloomy again.

I've tried a light box & find it doesn't give enough light to make a difference. The normal upper limits for light boxes are only 10,000 LUX, the amount of light on a cloudy mid-summer day. I need more than that, or at least longer than the recommended 1/2 hour under a light box. If I could, I'd have huge skylights throughout my place.
