Who are you like?

Posted by Cass on June 22, 2001, at 15:55:22

Is there any TV or literary character whose personality is a lot like yours? This might be an interesting way to get to know each other a little better.
My personality is a lot like "Ellen". (Although I'm not gay. I do support gay issues though.) I'm usually deferential and friendly. I can joke about myself and my life, and I'm parenthetical in the way I express myself. I'm also like Phoebe on "Friends" because she is a space case like me, and she is also dealing with a tragic background which is prabably what makes her a space case in the first place.

I'm alot like Monica on Friends. Very perfectionistic and picky. Paints me in a sort of bad light doesn't it? Oops. I'm not as bad as she is though, I swear.
lol

Olivia Benson on Law & Order SVU - she is kinda a loaner type, though she gets along with everyone - good at her job, though takes it too seriously (though, I'm not having that problem as much as I use to - I use to be way too serious about my work - now I may be a little too lax). She has a messed up past (daughter of a rape - total different messed up past than mine, but still, messed up). Anyway - that is about as close as I can get. Too many of my favorite characters are too "super" in too many ways for me to consider them like me in any way - strong, confident, "perfect," just how I want to be.

> Ya, I think I can relate to Olivia Benson as well. Combine Ally Mc Beal (minus the dancing baby) and the character Brett Butler played (I've been racking my brain but my memory is failing me)with Olivia & you have me. Gee, kinda leaves alot to the imagination, hmmm. That's about as close as I can get I suck at comparing likenessess. I would like to have DR. PHIL's characteristics. You know, the guy who's always on OPRAH. He's so straight forward & funny.

I'm Patrick McGoohan out of Prisoner a sixties series although I am female and far from being butch.
Or Signory Weaver in Alien cause yes I'd be stupid enough to go back for my cat.

Homage to Ray Davies of the Kinks: "I'm not like anybody else."

And, thank God, nobody is like me: one of me is enough.

Like the song "bitch" (not sure of the title,) it depends on who is looking.

As a child I wanted to be like Pippi & Heidi. My friends saw me like "Sandy" in Grease, nerd I guess. Probably the Laura Ingalls influence? As a teenager, I could of related to Wionna Reider in the beginning of "Girl Interrupted." One of my brothers at the time said I reminded him of Cindi Lauper. Now I'm probably like Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, except I don't know wher home is!

^^^^^^^

Who's "Cindy Lauper," my sweet?

And why would anybody want to be associated with somebody else?

A russian once told me (in russian, of course) that the second you wish you were somebody else, you're basically committing a kind of self-death.

Do you think this is true, my dumpling dear?

I, for one, wasn't saying I wanted to be those other people. I was just saying I see characteristics of myself in them.

To find home (to paraphrase a movie):

1) Stand up tall and take a deep breath in (then out, kazoo :-).

2) Close your eyes and tap your heels together three times (ruby slippers are optional).

3) Open your eyes, "look" around you, and you are home ("There's no place like home!").

Hope that this makes some sense. - Cam

I really needed that. I just lost my dog of seven years and haven't got much sympathy. The same time I found out a friend has terminal cancer and for this I'm feeling guilty for crying about my dog. My disabiltiy is being reviewed, which means thinking about what I've lost. And then I turn the TV on to distract myself from myself, and see the news. : (

I've upped my effexor. Quite frankly I just feel like going on a good walk about. My solution to problems, but it doesn't work so easily when you have a family.

Thanks Cam I needed the reality check. I burst into tears when I read your post. Sometimes a girl just needs a good cry. Thanks again Cam!!

I'm sorry to hear about your dog, Willow. I have a dog too, and she is precious. I'm sure yours was too. There's no way around the grief. Dogs give love and are so loveable; to lose a dog is a great loss. Good wishes to you.

I must also say this - this dont mean I live with my parents, or take any of the drugs above, regularly ;-)
and Homer simpson,ie beer, monkey knife fights, pork chops, beer, sleep, tv, so laid back that ya think he will fall over or suffer spinal injurys, beer. oh yeah and beer too.

I don't watch much tv, but saw an episode of the Simpsons, where the grandfather was babysitting. I laughed so hard because it looked a lot like my own situation here. Not a mirror reflection, but similarities.

ps thanks Cass! it's hard to grieve when no one shares your misery :( except the children, which makes it harder because i have to try and show that it'll be okay : )

I feel for you, and I understand. Our pets are our best friends. They give their love freely, unconditionally, and never take out their bad moods on you. They keep secrets, listen intently, talk back in their doggy ways (which you can always ignore), and give you big kisses when you are feeling down. They act silly, make fools of themselves, keep you laughing for hours on end. They show their emotions, and the only thing they will ever hide from you is their favorite bone!

I love my animals, and I still have tears for every one that I have lost.

Oh Willow, I was very sorry to read about your dog. I get so attached to my pets... I have Siamese cats. When I lost one of my little boys a few years ago (from cancer), it broke my heart. He was so intelligent and had such character. I would throw runner beans for him, and he'd run afer them and fetch them for me, putting it on my feet. I used to put him on his side and push him fast and hard across the carpet. He loved it. He would jump up at the other end, run back to me, and collapse upside down on my feet for the next push. When I would eat my dinner, he would sit beside me begging for bits of meat, continually patting my arm with his paw. If I ignored him for too long, he would jump down under the table, and next thing I knew, this black paw would suddenly reach up from under the table, with one claw extended as he tried to hook something off my plate. When I was ill, he would spend the whole day in bed with me, sitting on my chest, patting my face with his paw. It was like losing a best friend when he died. I know how you feel, and you have a lot of sympathy from me.

Thanks everyone! My daughter doesn't want to get another pet, because she thought it would mean that we didn't care anymore. I had explained to her that we can love more than one. And I guess I know that it hurts initially and gets easier with time. He was special to us! Maybe in time we may get another dog, but for now ...

Willow,
I can highly recommend a web site called www.petloss.com and I think a visit is in order for you and your kids.

You can write a memorial for your pet, and it is posted and kept 'forever' on the site and you (or kids) can go back and read it. Or you can go back and add to, or write again. Some of the stories there are deeply touching, and much to my surprise, a large number from males.

It also has the Rainbow Bridge story...where pets go when they die. It is beautiful and moving.

I grieved over the loss of my beloved Scruffles for a year, knowing that every holiday and special time without her would be sad for me. I still weep at times now. She was the only one I gave my heart to without fear...and she took very good care of it. (I'm very animal oriented, you can tell.)

Why you would feel guilty grieving the loss of a dear companion is beyond me. Your friend's diagnosis also is terrible and deserves your attention...in addition to, not instead of, your pet. And, why you want to keep a stiff upper lip...well...I think that just makes it harder to deal with when it happens to a pet one loves a great deal...pretending it doesn't hurt.

I'm not wanting to be critical. I'm wanting you and your kids to feel for your loss in a way that honors y'all and your pet.

xo
Shar

My fiancé told me i look like Jessica Lange in "Frances". I have a similar relationship with my mother, kind of rebel type of person, i loose my temper like her, etc.... I didn't get a lobotomy though, (thanks god! )but yes my life has been tragical but they didn't lock me up in an asylum even if they were going to do that years ago:they didn't catch me though : i ran away (caught a plane and found a place to hide for about a year).

I'll always remember the movie, Frances, and how sad it was that her mother wanted to expolit her. Frances Farmer was so intelligent, and she wanted something meaningful in her life, and all her mother wanted was for her to be a starlet. Frances Farmer's life really was tragic. I got the feeling the movie producer couldn't decide whether to portray her as crazy or exploited. Although I think being so misunderstood can drive you crazy. I'm sorry you've been through anything similar.
