Dream interpreters?

Posted by Dinah on April 16, 2004, at 12:21:19

I hope I haven't asked this before. But I have recurring dreams about houses that have waaaay more rooms and bigger rooms inside than you could possibly expect from the outside. Usually it's my own house. The last two were about houses I wanted to buy. But the recurring part is finding more and more and more rooms and being so excited.

Well, I'm not a dream interpreter by trade or anything, but, I'll give it a go...

I think it means that you're excited about how much you are learning about yourself - a reflection of how much you are discovering about *you* and also of how much more intricate you are than perhaps you ever imagined.

Just my thoughts.

My T always asks me what I think first. So, how do you interpret it?

I have to say I agree with Penny, though. And I'm glad you are excited about finding all the rooms. It does make sense to me as it always seems you are eager to learn about yourself and willing to explore.

Interestingly enough, I had a similar dream (just once), but it was my sister-in-law's house. Finding all the rooms was making me very, very frustrated :(.

Do you think maybe it also has something to do with your recent discussions here about ego states?

i'd have to say that it would reflect you. since you seem to think that you are so 'plain' (ha, i'll argue that till my death darling!!!) the house could represent you. but, on the inside, you find that there is so much more than that 'plain' image. there's so much more to see. just like you dear. so, explore yourself and see what you find you like. just like you, there are so many things about you that aren't 'plain'. and it's exciting to find out that you aren't nearly as 'plain' as you think.

is that what you think?

What you guys said is pretty much what my therapist said. That houses are often symbolic of yourself and that finding more rooms than appear possible on the surface probably means that I am more complex than I initally appear.

He also said that the best interpreter of dreams is the person that had them, but I've just always thought that it meant my house was too crowded with stuff and I would looove a house with more room. Sometimes I'm rather concrete.

I'll have to give it some consideration and see if anything shows up.

Hi D
I agree with Karen...

It's houses , rooms in your mind..
I'm usually in the basement in my dreams or trying to renovate rooms.
Rarely I'm on the roof but then I usually have to fight off other creatures.

my house dreams a lot of times are about a house that's rickety, multistory, with no walls, and about to tumble down in a storm or earthquake.

tabitha dear,

how are you feeling lately? are you feeling rather stable? or are you feeling confused and rickety? i'm a bit bothered by this dream. and the lack of walls.... possibly a lack of stalility in your life right now? or you feel like you have nothing to 'kinda hold on to or grasp for comfort' (you know, that feeling when you are walking through your house and you grab the walls just to have something to hold onto)? i could be way off base with this and i apologize for butting in dear with my rather juvenial attempt to interpret your dream. but, i am rather a bit bothered by it darling. (especially since doorways provide stability during an earthquake.)

hopefully, this dream will one day turn into a house that has no walls or ceiling, but there is sunshine and you grow wings and fly out the top into your castle in the sky dear.

and know that you always have friends and support here at babble dear. i'm always listening. and don't worry about the storm. it won't come. we're here. we just won't let it dear. not possible.

p.s. i still have that blasted left-over ice cream in my fridge from your party. will you come over and help me eat the remains? i won't dare throw it out. too many wonderful memories from a very good party...

I tend to the literal too so I think we'd have to know how many square feet you already have. Maybe under 2000 and a house is a house, over it and it can be symbolic? Where I come from dreams about houses are dreams about houses. For that matter dreams about yourself are about houses, dreams about sex are about houses, dreams ..... Well you get the general idea.

No cause for alarm, it's been a while since I had one of those rickety house dreams.. I just remember a bunch of them, maybe it was a few years ago? I'm doing pretty good these days. No recent house dreams that I recall. I like your sunshine and wings image.

Can't help with your ice cream-- I'm still finishing up the 3 cartons I bought. Just had to have 3 flavors for the banana split, see. Even with the smallest size carton, 3 lasts a long time. Poor me, all that ice cream to eat. And the whipped cream-- there's really more in that can than you'd think.

I can be too. I had that kind of dream, and I didn't wonder why too much in my case. I have had a typical, tiny, generically laid out city apartment for years. My dream was of discovering a wing of untold proportions off to the rear. As dreams go, I had known -- yet not known -- that it was there. It was all draped in imperial looking pale pink and forest green velvet, with seating area after seating area of luxuriously upholstered chaise lounges and other furniture (which is not a style I dream about by day!).

Oh, what a pang I got upon awakening and realizing it wasn't really there. Don't you just hate that?? But the oddest part is that when I read about your dream, my own came back to me vividly; however, I literally don't know if I had it five years ago or last night! Does that ever happen to you -- that by day the memory of a dream is triggered by something; and at first it feels like a familiar old dream, but then you get a hunch that you may have just had it? It's kind of bugging me now! ;- )

As far as dream interpretations, I know one person I wouldn't ask! I'll never forget telling a guy friend of mine that I had a dream about him and some girl being somewhere, but that I couldn't remember anything else about it. He kept asking me about details like the coat she had on, as if it were a photograph and he could figure out if it was someone he knew! Guess he was hoping I'd had a premonition about him and whoever he had in mind!

Hi Dinah,
I don't think I'm a direct descendent of Joseph, and certainly you won't take my head if I get this wrong, so here goes.

I'm thinking that there might be a couple of different interpretations to your dream. Maybe they can coexist.

The little child in you used to wander your home. As she would go around the house, every corner, every piece of furniture was a wonderous marvelous place, much more interesting and manageable to the mind than was the entire room taken in all at once. Looking at your home from your adult eyes, you see perhaps ten rooms. Looking at that home as a child, that home is so much larger. It is two homes at once.
Perhaps that is why in your dreams, your home can seem normal and then so much larger, all at once.

As an adult, I look at the rooms not so much as finding the hidden places in your mind, but more how much larger your world becomes, as your mental health improves. It fills with opportunites that you couldn't take advantage of due to your limitations. It is your world opening up.

My two cents...

CAVEAT: This interpretation has been formulated with a brain that is obviously not functioning well at all. Thus the prophetess makes no warantee whatsoever as to it's accuracy. Should the dreamer wish to act on the statements in this interpretation, she assumes sole responsibility and risk for the outcome.

Sorry, but one must be safe, shouldn't she?

Dee.

I've got one like that. I never clearly remember it, but it always feels like I just had it. My best guess is that it had something to do with a toy sized carousel or maybe assembly line of oooh, what was that stuff? It was in my old Beautiful Butterflies set, and now is in the bug set for boys. You put it in a mold and bake it and it becomes rubbery.

Those are interesting ideas, Dee.

Next time I have the dream, I'll try to try on all the possibilities.

Of course, now I've had this conversation I'm likely never to have the dream again. Pity, really.

Dinah,

I hate dreams.... really :-)
I've had one recurring dream that I've had on and off since I was really young. I've never been able to find out what it was about, but I once drew the main image in the dream. I used to think the dream was about frustration, but when I drew the picture and looked at it, it seems to suggest some of my early abuse.
I've had the classical scars going around the block, etc. I don't know for certain what most of them mean. Maybe someday I will. As I said, the first one is beginning to make sense, but I've also talked about it some with my therapist. I guess that some of them mean something, and others probably don't.
Maybe you too can try drawing the images and perhaps see if they mean something other to you than they do in your dreams.

Dee.
