depression, anxiety, stress and ocd

Posted by the lonely one on December 27, 2003, at 17:58:21

Hi

I have been on mirtazapine for about 8 months now. I have seen my doctor monthly and told him I would like to see someone who I could talk to. I was then put on a list to see someone at my local hospital. I thought i would be on the list for a couple of months. When I phoned I was told it would be at least 9 months. I would like to tell my family members what iam going through and what thoughts i have but i do not want to worry them. I have been looking on the internet for a while now to share my thoughts when i found this site. I hope this will help.

Thanks

What country do you live in? If you are in the US, do you have insurance?

I know that long waits are typical in some non-US places, and I hope that people from there could help you.

In the US, you should be able to see a therapist in less than 9 months. If you don't have insurance, or are on medicaid your options are more limited, but you still should be able to get in within a couple of months.

Talking to family and friends can be either very helpful or quite painful - depending on their knowledge of mental illness. I would start by trying to identify who you know who seems the most compassionate and flexible, who has discussed mental illnesses in the past (either their own experience or the experience of people they are close to). People who have never had experience with mental illness can have a really hard time understanding it.

When you do find someone who seems to understand you have found gold. These people will make an incredible difference in your life.

You could also seek out a support group, as these people will be more likely to understand what you are going through.

And post here. Many of us will be able to relate to you.

Hi

I live in the UK. At the moment the cost of going private would be a burden on my financial situation and would probably leave me more
stressed out. The option of seeking help from my hospital would have helped me as there would have been no cost involved. I have spoken to some members of my family who have been supportive but there are certain aspects of what I would like to discuss with them I feel I must hide. This is to save them from worrying about me more than they have to.

Thanks

Perhaps you can find one person who you can completely confide in. I know that you don't want to worry them, but keeping things completely hidden can often make them loom larger than they really are. Just speaking them outloud can take some of the terror or shame out of them. It is also often true that if people know that we aren't telling them everything that they imagine things that are worse than the truth. I hope that you can find someone to share with - I know that it eases my burden when I can.
