what's good for hypoglycemia?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on June 19, 2014, at 10:33:58

I tend towards hypoglycemia as a rule, but it's suddenly become out-of-control the past week. I can't quite understand why. I was taking resistant starch, but dropped it thinking it might be a culprit .. and the symptoms have persisted.

In essence, I can't feel full and have the most awful cravings for sugar/carbs, in addition to feeling lightheaded, weak etc. Gorging on healthy fats (avocado, coconut oil etc.) or protein does nothing. The only other supplement I take is Niacin, which I'll stop to see if it's contributing. Oh, and I stared Sodium Butyrate 2 nights ago as a replacement for the starch.

Is there anything I could try supplementally that might help? I have some Chromium Picolinatem but have read mixed things about it helping/hurting hypoglycemia.

Thanks!

Try eating more complex carbs like brown rice and sweet potatoes. Glutamine makes me feel a little better, but Dr. Mercola warns that it can make hypoglycemia worse. Virgin coconut oil or MCT oil might help. So might niacinamide.

Thanks for your reply, Hugh. I am eating complex carbs and gorging on healthy fats like coconut oil and MCT, but I'm having to eat like every 30 minutes to stay conscious. I'm going to see a doctor about it.

I'm a bit confused about the whole insulin-resistance/sensitivity and blood sugar thing. Do you have much of a grasp on it? I thought increased insulin sensitivity would be bad for hypoglycemia, but I've been reading that improving insulin sensitivity helps both high and low blood sugar. And in that regard, a few people have commented that the resistant starch should improve hypoglycemia.

I find it confusing also. Potato starch made me feel tired, and Bimuno makes me feel better and doesn't drive down my blood sugar. Chromium is supposed to help hypoglycemia, but it makes me feel worse. Seeing a doctor is a good idea. It could be something else is wrong.

I wonder if magnesium would help.

Magnesium-L-threonate is more absorbable than any other form of magnesium -- even IV magnesium.

Thanks, Hugh. Weirdly enough, my symptoms have been quite a bit better the past week (blood test results showed nothing), and the only real change I've made has been adding a low-dose of Mag-T. The amount of Magnesium it contains it small (30% RDA, I think?), but perhaps it's helping.
