glycine? will it make me depressed?

Posted by sam K on August 21, 2009, at 2:12:52

listen, I dont like wasting money, I got blood in me from my dad and hes obsessed with money.
I figure it will be good for bipolar mania, but will it drop me too low?
And confusing enough, it says its an excitory neurotransmitter? what? I dont understand this.

Magnesium really helps my bipolar mania/grandiosity. AND i take magnesium oxide. I think thats supposed to have the lowest bioavailibility? Thats all they sell at the grocery stores.

Also, looking into GABA. Ive taken it before, and it seems to make me unmotivated/stonerish. Plus, my skin is kind of flabby and I think it helps people tone up.

Glycine was depressing to me, as was gaba, 5htp, magnesium, or anything inhibitory. Your presentation appears different than mine, so glycine has more potential to be helpful to you than me.

I would ignore dose suggestions on the bottle though. Start with tiny smidgen doses, ones maybe you can't even feel. Work up from there. That way you can judge where you start to feel it and what you are feeling. I think a lot of people bomb themselves out of useful trials by following bottle labels.

I don't know who called glycine excitatory but that I am pretty sure is misinformation. Glycine is commonly found in antianxiety combos with gaba and magnesium.

Why is there a caution for people who take clozapine also taking glycine?

I took some glycine last night. Today is badish. I wonder if there is a connection?

Glycine can interfere with anti psychotic meds.
(Check the first paragraph under Objective:)

Glycine is an inhibitory amino acid in the CNS. In the treatment of Schizophrenia for example very large dosages are taken. It's difficult to say why you felt bad, it might be simply because the effect of Glycine wore off and you felt stimulated again, or it could be because of much more complicated neurotransmitter interactions.

Glycine does work. I've used it in the past before I was on a high dose of antipsychotic. You just have to be careful of the dosage. Too much glycine can bring on a depressive state. The best dosage that worked for me was about 3,000mg. I would suggest trying a low dosage, say 2,000mg, and see if that helps. Just for the record, 5,000mg put me in a depressive state, so be careful. Just the right dosage can really help, but I would caution people who are on high doses of an antipsychotic. If so, the glycine may not work well for you. I hated GABA. You're right. It makes you highly unmotivated. It's junk in my opinion. Glycine is a much better amino acid. Just be mindful of how much you take. Another amino you can try for bipolar if you are highly manic is N-Acetyl-cysteine. It is supposed to help, but may take a long time to see definite results. Good luck.

Would taking glycine at night for sleep affect mood the next day? I try to take all of my inhibitory stuff at night. If so, would magnesium glycinate produce the same effect, or is it different?

isn't glycine indirectly excitory since it allows for the release of glutamine?

Yes, it might affect mood the next day. I had this experience with magnesium glycinate. Too much of it may make you lethargic. I'm not sure about glycine. I used to take it during the day, not at night.

I am surprised by how differently I react to the various forms of magnesium. I'm not sure if it's coincidence or what, but with the citrate and taurate forms, I take them at night and wake up during the night, more awake than I'd like. With the glycinate form, I sleep through the night but wake a little earlier than I like with a bit of energy, which I prefer to the former. I hadn't really noticed much with strictly glycinate, other than it makes me feel a little paralyzed, in a pleasant way, when asleep. I do know that around the time I began taking it, I needed to up my "up" aminos the next day. But I had also been toying with other things, such as magnesium and holy basil around the same time, so I don't know what caused what.
