On November 10, 2004, an article was published on the website of the journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, that instantly made headlines around the country.(1) TV and radio news, and newspapers such as USA Today quickly reported that “High dose of vitamin E increases death risk.”(2)

That's bad. You need 'mixed tocopherols'. Hope you have a good health food store :-)

Hey J, I hope you don't mind if I do. The death rate thing is from not getting the best balance between all the different tocopherols. The main one you need is gamma tocopherol, which is the main form of vitamin E in food, and you may find it in a formula with mixed tocopherols in a liquid capsule. Look for one that contains a maximum of the gamma form. Once you start taking that you can take your DL alpha tocopherol acetate with it or alternately. I think that's the story.

Hi Jeroen,

>how much should i take for TD?

Perhaps you could try 800 IU (units) twice a day. This dose has been used with success in patients with TD.

>is there any death risk?

Not if you buy the 'mixed tocopherols'. You need to take the right type of vitamin E. Declan gave some good advice.

Kind regards

> Hi Jeroen, Ed's right about the mixed tochopherols. But the lastest info in the States is that anything over 200IU a day is bad for you. And I used to take 800IU a day in the past. But didn't you say your eye blinking was better? Fondly, Phillipa

Any info saying that vit E is bad for you I think is reserved for the alpha tocopherol form. I don't recall this being applied to mixed tocopherols, but regardless, 1600 IU seems slightly high.

I have taken 2000 IU a day for a several months. At the time I was taking it for Peyronie’s disease. I had complete remission of the condition. Good luck.

Hi Jeroen,

My condition was different. But E did appear to help it. I'm not afraid of vitamin E. If you scan the literature there is MUCH more pro than con. Frankly I don't remember what type I was taking when I was doing large doses, it's been several years ago. I still take small dosages because it has positive benefits in a variety of ways. If I had to take a large dose again I would take a natural form which is designated with a "d," as in d-alpha. Synthetic forms will be designated with a "dl," as in dl-alpha. Also I would take mixed tocopherols as other posters have suggested.
Take it for 3 weeks, observe the results then re-evaluate. That's my opinion, I do hope you get some relief.

warm regards ~Jake

hi i found http://www.koshervitamins.com/shop/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?$session39=36&page_id=23&Item_ID=149

Freeda Vitamin E 400 IU With Mixed Tocopherols 500 TAB

is this ok? i will take it in high dose 1600 IU or 2000 IU for 2 months

I did research about the danger of vitamin E. please your comments,

The synthetic form is dangerous in high doses! However, the Natural Mixed Tocopherols (real vitamin E) has been shown to be perfectly safe, even at higher doses. The different forms of vitamin E are distinct and seperate. Thus, to truly understand vitamin E, you must truly understand the different forms availible.

please check here, PLEASE HELP ME!
I need to make the right choice, i dont want to end up worse

Obviously this is a confusing subject and deserves research as you have done. Here's another article:

Which seems to say that if you take the right kind of E and have an otherwise balanced diet it can be very helpful. Beware of media hype.

> TO ED UK - IS 1600 IU safe each day of those mixed tocepherol the link i showed you?

Yes. Absolutely.

I can't think of any subject that has become more prone to scare tactics than is vitamin supplementation.

The Upper Limit for daily intake of alpha-tocopherol is set at 1410 IU (1000 mg/day).

How was that number determined? From studying rats. Rats were given 500 mg/kg/day throughout their lives. After about 24 weeks, subtle changes in blood clotting capacity emerged. Despite clear evidence that the changes were due to vitamin K deficiency, these changes were accepted as the Lowest Observeable Adverse Effects Level indicator symptoms for adverse effects of vitamin E intake.

But how do you determine safe human intakes from chronic massive intake effects in rats? You apply various safety factors (mathematical reduction), which convert the rat threshold of effect into a safe threshold for humans. Using those safety factors, 500 mg/kg/day in rats is prudently equated to 14 mg/kg/day in humans (36-fold reduction). Just to be on the safe side. And ignoring the fact that the adverse effects were not due to vitamin E at all, but were signs of vitamin K deficiency.

Jeroen, I see no reason for you to be worried about trying to treat your symptoms with vitamin E, at your suggested dose level. Yes, I would recommend using the mixed tocopherols, like you have found at that website. It would be prudent to ensure that you also get good intake of vitamin C and alpha-lipoic acid, as they work in tandem with vitamin E. Also, one meal a week of dark green leafy vegetables would ensure that you are not deficient in vitamin K.

Good luck. I wish you success.
