GABA and Xanax

Posted by Simus on September 6, 2005, at 21:44:12

I am trying to get completely off of Xanax. I was only on 0.75mg, but I have been taking Xanax for over 10 years. The initial drop was to 0.6875mg (2 3/4 0.25mg pills) almost two weeks ago, and I am still adjusting.

I am taking magnesium and B vitamins for their calming effects, and it does help somewhat. But I was wondering about taking GABA capsules. Could anyone tell me if there is a problem combining GABA and Xanax? Has it worked for anyone?

If u want to add the effects of gaba to ur xanax, your best bet is using l theanine which increases blood levels of both gaba and dopamine, and can cross the brain.

Taurine also effects gaba and works well with benzos.

As for gaba itself, over the counter gaba does not cross the blood brain barrier, also it for a lot of people agigtates them causing a blushing red of the skin and a pins and needles effect in the feet. But it doesent get to the brain, and taking a lot will just make u dizzy and woozy.

L theanine is prob one of the easiest to obtain localy, most effective ways of increasing gaba id look into it.

FYI a lot of meds such as gabatril have gaba attatched to a chemical that CAN cross into the brain.

Gabatril for example is gabba vinyl.

Wow. Thanks.

I have never even heard of it. Sounds like its an amino acid. I will check it out.

That is great info. I do have taurine, but got it for some other reason and haven't tried it yet.

Agitation and dizziness is also part of benzo withdrawal--a big part of what I am looking for relief from. Thanks for the warning!

I have never heard of Gabatril. I wonder if it is used like Xanax (for anxiety), or for Xanax withdrawal.

Thanks for the help!

Niacinamide is supposed to help with benzo withdrawal. Combining Niacinamide, Inositol and GABA is supposed to be the most effective. Gaba is largely ineffective on it's own, although some people disagree.

There are companies who make supplements with these three supplements combined in the correct amounts.

Twinlabs GABA Plus is the one I'm thinking of.

Taking Taurine and Magnesium Glycinate is also reported to help.

Other supplements that enhance the effects of Gaba or increase Gaba levels are Pikamilone and L-Theanine, Valerian and possibly Kava Kava. Before taking any of these supplements I recommend a good search about on google and possibly pubmed.com

Obviously there can be quite nasty rebound anxiety with Benzos as it's widely known for this to happen. Whether there's a rebound effect from stopping supplements I'm not sure. I think they are all less potent than benzos so if there is it may be mild.

Hi Trucker!

I am still, after 5 weeks, working on feeling "normal" again after the FIRST drop in dosage of Xanax. I am going to hold here for a while even after I come around 100%. Getting off Xanax clearly isn't going to be as quick as I originally thought. But I am still as determined to get off it.

Good to hear from you! Hope all is well.
