Has anyone here has tried caregiver provided amino acid therapy? There is a place not far from me in NYC that does just this... I am a medication sensitive patient, so I'm thinking about giving it a shot... I suffer from depression, anxiety and ocd.
I read in this book, that if you take a lot of a particular amino acid, you can imbalance the others. Kind of like a balancing scale. The book also claims you need to take certain ratios of aminos in order to make them optimized. Any thoughts?

Hello ghuber
My nutritional dr has recommended that I take a few. Let's see....tryptophan, dl phenylalanine, glycine, taurine and lysine, for one thing or another.
I dunno about the balance thing, I suppose you wouldn't want to overdo it.
I have read that if you take amino acids you should take a supplement containing all of them to prevent depletion.

For example, I believe tyrosine and tryptophan are taken into the brain by the same amino acid transporter. Thus, too much tyrosine can cause a mild deficiency of tryptophan. Beyond that, I can't remember what aminos are taken up by what transporters. I would think a quick 10 minute google search would yield the answers you're searching for.

>Yeah that's exactly what I did last year -- I took a decent amount of Tyrosine (1-2g daily) without any 5HTP or Tryptophan and it totally screwed me up. After over a year of having little to no symptoms of my OCD (Drug free) I started to obsess again and had to go back on medication.
I'm trying to find the right proportions of Amino acids because I hate meds. I'm not too sure though what the corrects amounts are....
I hear L-dopa works better than Tyrosine, and Tryptophan works better then 5HTP. Can anyone confirm?

When I take tyrosine throughout the day, I get extremely irritable and dysphoric and I feel stressed out - like high strung, like I've come down from like 9 cups of coffee. But yet, I still feel energetic and motivated. The irritability is COMPLETELY removed with a nice dose of 5-htp, though, so it's definitely cuz of the tyrosine.I find that if I take a 500mg or 1,000mg of tyrosine once in the morning, this works very nicely as a morning stimulant and as long as i dont take more, i dont get irritable.
