St John's Wort Instead of AD's?

Posted by Phillipa on March 12, 2005, at 6:31:34

I've not had the best of luck with Ad's. I've been on a glucosamine product of Melaleuca for my backpain and it's improved in 2 weeks. They have a product for depression with St. John's Wort also. I'm thinking of trying this but I know you can't take it with AD's. How long do you have to be off of an Ad before trying it? I'm totally impressed with these products and it takes a lot to impress me. What do you think? Should I try it? I will still need valium for sleep. Fondly, Phillipa

mmmmm this is really controvery, i have been on my own trials with SJW for 7 weeks, i took high doses during the end, one side effect is too much sun exposure more sensitive skin, i got sunburned BAD running one day. I just gave it up, that was 2-3 years ago. I cant really tell you if there was a difference, i can rerember some lift, but i dont know if it was the placebo effect.

You may want to try it, i dont belive any reactions to diazepam at all.

Soon will be directed to alernative..

Your call Dr-Bob.

You can be so funny! I like you. Did you combine it with an AD? I have heard it can be dangerous. Fondly, Phillipa ps I mentioned meds, so maybe it won't be redirected!

hey! I've never done the st. john's wort thing, but I have taken 5-HTP, which supposedly boosts serotonin levels in your brain. It worked well, but it has a 3X daily dosing schedule and its not covered by insurance, so I ditched it. Before you do anything herbal...do a little bit of research on the dosage you need and the concentration of active ingredients desired. With anti-depressants St.John's Wort (or SAMe, or 5-HTP, etc.) I think the rule is to never combine treatments and obviously you'll want to do a washout before taking an "alternative" treatment. I think the rule for going from SSRI-MAOI is 2 weeks SSRI-free, except Prozac, which is more along the lines of 5 weeks. I'd use those guidelines, since the MAOI-SSRI interaction can be fatal the guidelines probably err on the safe side. As for interaction with other drugs, like Valium, I think the best place to check would be with data culled from the German E commission (I think that's what its called), which is used to study things like st.john's wort...before it hit it big in the US, I believe st. John's Wort had been available via RX in parts of Europe.

Thanks for the feedback. It was just a thought since AD's don't seem to work. Fondly, Phillipa

Phillipa,

I think you should try the St. John's Wort, just to see if it will work for you, because, you know, you never know until you try! You are the best judge of what is going on in your body and how it is affecting you. And if the Melaleuca brand doesn't work for you, I would like to recommend the brand of St. John's Wort that I'm using. It's called Perika and you can order it at www.vitacost.com. It is a purer and stronger form of St. John's Wort, and is working for me whereas other brands have not.

I really like sjw. I take it in combination with 10mg prozac and 5mg zyprexa. The prozac and zyprexa basically keep me non-depressed, but lacking in motivation. Overall blawness, anhedonia, apathy, avolition, but not sad or depressed. I go by how I feel, and with that as a guide I ended up at 600mg sjw which provides nice motivation and social comfort. Though the combinations of herbs and pharmaceuticals scare a lot of people, they can be safe and effective when dosed carefully. For example, I started with just a half pill of sjw per day. I was on the lookout for it to either increase or decrease plasma levels of zyprexa, which it didn't do. It has worked wonderfully so far, at about 8 weeks.
