Intrusive Thoughts

Posted by Lamdage22 on January 14, 2023, at 5:43:41

So there is kind of an OCDish spin to me lately. I hear this problem can be caused or at least worsened by Neuroleptis and that Olanzapine usually is the worse offender, not Seroquel. I take both.

My sleep is good, I could reduce somewhat.

Does anyone know of any psychotherapy techniques here? And maybe techniques to avoid?

Any easy to take substances that could support?

And please be supportive if you answer.

I don't know but OCD is usually treated with SSRIs and sometimes antipsychotics are used. I had risperidone prescribed to me to combat presumed OCD symptoms (no, didn't help; I don't see myself has having had much problem with OCD but at times I can get into a cycle of worrying needlessly and excessively; the best treatment I've found for that is nicotine).

Hi Lamdage,

Glad to see you back! You deserve to be supported..absolutely!

Like U_D said, SSRI's are often the go to meds for OCD'ish symptoms. The one, fluvoxamine, was designed specifically for OCD. The tricyclic, clomipramine, was the main OCD med prescribed before the SSRI's came along. It is much milder in side effects than SSRI's.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is the most effective talk therapy for OCD. It uses what is called exposure and extinction. There are some good workbooks out there on it's use. Also, 'Mindfulness' apps you can find for your phone, like one called 'Calm', are very effective and quite popular.

I'd also suggest a supplement called Choline. I find the choline in Lecithin caps, 4 caps 1-2x a day, very calming. The anticholinergic property of Seroquel can deplete your body's store of choline, which can be a good anxiety fighter. OCD is an anxiety disorder.

Just throwing some thoughts out there.

Jay

Hey U_D,

Nicotine indirectly stimulates cholinergic receptors, no? (That's probably a gross simplification...but...)

Thanks, guys. I reliably get anorgasmia with SSRI, so that isn't nice, either.

It is sort of like a 'don't think of a pink elephant' thing with these intrusive thoughts. I tell myself 'it would be very inappropriate to think XYZ'. Then I think XYZ. Then I beat myself up concluding I am a bad person and try to suppress the toughts more. It doesn't help. I think that is where change needs to happen psychologically.

I will take a look at Choline. Neuroleptics are a two edged sword. I think they can help OCD, but they can also worsen it. At least that is what I believe after googling the issue.

Intrusive thoughts started once I was on Neuroleptics. So the verdict is they dont help with this and probably worsen it.

Nicotine *directly* stimulates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which were named after it.
