I don't know if appropriate for this board. But since so many parts of the USA and other Countries here how bad is the real flu in your area. The news is saying many deaths throughout this season. I don't get the flu shots. Don't want the form of mercury in them. Phillipa

I've never gotten a flu shot. Thankfully I never get sick, other than a runny nose or slight caugh. Haven't been actually sick and feeling ill and all that in like 14 years.

Same here. I probably should. But the last time I had the flu was 16 years ago and I wasn't even that sick. Before that -- maybe 25 years?

I'd be too afraid that getting a flu shot could in a way, mess up my immune system and make me susceptible to the flu for now on. I've never actually heard of it doing this to someone , but ya never know.

I do know that about 6 years ago both I and husband got the shot. And about two months later was Christmas sick as dogs with the flu. Same thing happened to next door neighbor last year. So no more for me and she said none for her either. I feel the immune system goes into overdrive to overcome the foreign shot and weakens you for quite some time. Not had the flu since. Hope this continues. Phillipa

That could be the case, with it eventually weakening your immunity. There are just too many things that the regulatory agencies (FDA) call the shots on, where there's still too much incomplete knowledge to be able to make an informed regulation. Such as approving a certain drug or how it should be prescribed. Or it could be that its really the corporations/ Drug Companies calling the shots in many circumstances.
I think this applies in just about every area of medicine. Whether its the Flu Shot, Antidepressants or many other meds. As well as our food supply, with many preservatives and artificial flavors deemed to be safe, even when another country has that certain preservative classified as a Carcinogen. Such as BHT and BHA that I mentioned in the thread on cancer that you started.

I agree. I think of the chemicals I ingest daily from food, meds and maybe this is one of the reasons so much cancer? Phillipa

I have had the flu shot every year for 35 years.
Usually forget all about it within minutes.
I am a healthy person, though, despite certain things I bring on myself (overweight, sedentary). I also wash my hands often during flu season, faithfully now for at least 10+ years, and even more scrupulous since working in ICU 2006-2008.
My lack of colds, flu, and the like I chalk up mostly to the blessing of an excellent immune system, which really comes down to genetics. I think favorable genes, the immunization, taking precautions and luck all work together.
I trust the science in favor of taking the influenza immunization more than the arguments against it, and I've tried to read up on both.
It's all you can do, really. And keep in mind correlation does not equal causation in any case, and when we think so, it is likely a quite emotional (and so very human) response.
And...I've seen two elderly people with the flu when I did work in an ICU. It wasn't pretty. One recovered and the other did not :-(. I remember the family was incredulous that someone could die from "just the flu."

But then they made us get our shots for physio... And part of that was taking the opportunity to educate us about the things we were required to be immunised against... And the things we weren't... But could choose to be...We were told that immunisation wasn't so much about protecting the person who was immunised. In our cases, anyway. Immunisation was about preventing the spread of disease in order to protect those who are most vulnerable: The young. The old. Those with compromised immune systems.
So... To think of it more as public service or charity rather than self interest.
I never thought of it like that before.
But I've never had a flu shot. And... I probably won't. Sigh. Maybe one day when I'm richer.

Got them when worked in the hospital and for years floated to all the different Floors a lot to ICU and step down units. I didn't witness any flu deaths. Doesn't mean they don't happen though. My choice and husbands is that we do no longer get them. Phillipa

Not sure if you saw it Phillipa, but in the news recently was the girl who contracted Narcolepsy from her flu shot....and then it turns out the same thing happened to at least 100 other people.
Dealing with Lyme disease, I have come to respect and fear the immune system in a profound way. In my experience, it is a heavy player in just about every condition and symptom we experience, and there is a great deal of mystery.....when we mess with it, we are playing with fire...the outcome could be good but could also go terribly wrong.
Millions of flu shots. Scary.
I think the shots are available now with a non-mercury option? Patients should definitely ask before they get their shot and refuse it if it has the mercury based preservative.
Supporters point to the millions of successful flu shots. Or assumed to be successful. I'm sure many of the bizarre unintended consequences go unreported or there is a failure to draw the link between the person's new condition and the shot they got a few weeks ago.
As with everything else, it comes down to a personal decision of whether the potential benefits are worth the risks or not.
Olive Leaf extract or any of about a half dozen other herbal medicines, in my experience and opinion, do a better and far safer job of managing viral bugs than does a flu shot.
