Moclobemide. Anyone with experience?

Posted by Timebomb on July 12, 2013, at 12:01:25

Hi all,

I've been on Moclobemide for nearly two weeks, titrating up to 600mg.

I'm so anxious about drugs, and I'm worried this might make me put on weight (or stop me losing it, which I'm trying to do now.)

Any experience? Some seem to say it's great. Others say it's useless. Side effects I'm most worried about are weight, sexual problems, edema etc.

Also, how long did it take to work?

Thanks all.

That's a good dose to set as an initial target. You can go up to 1200 mg/day if necessary.

Moclobemide has a favorable side effect profile. It usually will not produce weight gain or sexual side effects. I am not sure about edema. Unfortunately, moclobemide is one of the least effective antidepressants. Of course, you won't know its value until you give it a fair trial. The thing about moclobemide is that one frequently finds himself raising the dosage higher and higher to offset the development of tolerance (tachyphylaxis) to its therapeutic effects. If you do respond to moclobemide, but only transiently, you might be a Nardil responder. I say this because I believe that Nardil is more of a MAO-A inhibitor than is Parnate. Of course, Nardil produces the unwanted side effects that you are trying to avoid. You might then try Parnate first just to see what happens. Actually, you might try Marplan if that drug is available to you. It is like Nardil but with milder side effects.

I tried moclobemide and reacted quite badly to it. I never felt worse than I did on that drug.

Have you tried taking nortriptyline or Effexor?

What have you tried?

Everyone must make a judgment as to whether their depression is worse than the side effects produced by its the treatment.

My experience was that it didn't help. I don't recall any side effects.

I took it for about six months at a dose of 600mg/day. I'm not sure how quickly it started to work. I started at 300 mg for a month or two with moderate success. I found the dosage increase to 600 mg helped very quickly, within 2-3 days. I found it very stimulating and had chronic insomnia on it. I could take 100 mg of benadryl or doxylamine and still toss and turn. I needed benzos to sleep: 2 mg ativan. It pooped out after 6 months unfortunately. But it was pretty good while it lasted. I would say actually that it made me a little hypomanic. I lost about 15 lbs without trying.

I heard some dude (talked to him) be fine for like 7 years on Moclobemide. Im talking totally fine.

Sadly, it subsided and the trash theyre giving him now doesnt work. Of course, for some heinious reason, they didnt give him Parnate.

I had a very positive response to moclobemide at first. The only side effect was insomnia... Pretty vicious insomnia actually. Then after about 5 months it pooped out. It seems like my body always compensates in some way for the increased levels of neurotransmitters by downregulating dopamine. Most antidepressants give me pretty serious anhedonia after a while. I can't help but think there is a clue here but I can't quite wrap my head around it. At this point I'm convinced that SSRIs, SNRIs, and MAOIs eventually lead me to the same place. I wish someone would figure out the "poop out" phenomenon. I really think it's a compensatory mechanism involving dopamine and if only there was a way to block that mechanism.

At what dosage did you first notice an improvement?

What was your final dosage?

My intuition tells me that dopamine is the final domino to fall rather than the first. I think the compensatory mechanisms lie upstream.
