New to the board and barely coping

Posted by allysmom7pa on September 12, 2009, at 14:58:23

I am new to the boards and really looking for some help. I have always suffered from some form of anxiety but as of the past 2 weeks I cant even leave my house. I was taking 40 paxil and xanax as needed until I felt like nothing is working anymore. I have missed 2 weeks of work, I have 2 small children to care for and I can barely function or step foot out my front door. My husband used to be my "safe" person but not as of lately for some reason. I am starting to have issues with staying home alone with or without my kids, I completely freak out. My dr has decided that I should alternate nights taking 40 paxil and 20 paxil, has me on 1-2 mg of xanax and has started me on 7.25 mg of buspar. I guess her goal is to get me off the paxil and completely on buspar but so far no go. I have taken the Buspar twice and let me tell you I feel crazy. I have the tremors, headache, jelly legs, light headed the whole nine. I haven't taken any now in 24 hours and i feel semi normal after taking a xanax. I cant keep living like this. Does anyone have any suggestions? My dr seems to think my body might have gotten used to the paxil but would boosting up to 60mg maybe help? I have been on it for 4 years and no issues until now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry that you are going through so much pain. I think you stay on meds for now. But a better approach would be to get some CBT (therapy) for your anxiety. CBT can give you coping skills to deal with the anxiety. I highly recommend it. I don't think any pill is going to help you leave the house.

Take care.

Welcome to babble not leaving the house is a form of agoraphobia and you must not let yourself fall into this. Get out daily if only for a walk. I know as have it only in reverse can't stay home. Phillipa

I found Paxil to be a an anxiety enhancer myself.
Other ADs might be less so.
If you are having all that fear you might want to ask your doctor to rethink your meds
That said, the only experience I had with Buspar is that it pulled me out of a high anxiety constant. If you have jelly legs perhaps the buspar dose is too high?
good luck to you

That is a tough situation. Did the extra anxiety come without any change it meds? Do you take the long acting Xanax? Do you know if Paxil has been the best SSRI for your anxiety? Has their been any hormone changes?
I can sympathize with some anxiety about being alone at home, or having to go home alone.
I have always been depressed but didn't really suffer from bad anxiety. But after a trial of Emsam & then going off, I developed extreme anxiety that was miserable. I had no idea anxiety could be that painful. My body would wake up at 5:30 every morning no matter what time I went to bed. And I would run to try & get the anxious energy out- didn't work. I wasn't anxious about anything, my body was just in that mode. I even went to the hospital for a couple of days. I think what helped was increasing my long-acting Xanax to 2mg and Celexa. And sometimes I wonder if part of it was that I tried to balance my hormones w/ bc. (which can also make it worse). I read that progesterone is the calming one. But you never know what messing w/ your hormones can do.
I don't have that anxiety any more. I think over time my body made some adjustments. I no longer take the bc, but I am still on 2mg of Xanax & have the short acting ones if I need them (although I don't use them).
I would probably try increasing your Paxil. I don't know much about Buspar, but it doesn't sound like its good for you if it is making you feel crazy. Maybe you could start to add/replace Celexa or some other SSRI if you haven't tried them. I am so sorry for your pain, that is serious stuff.

Your Paxil may have just pooped out on you. Maybe discuss with your doc about switching over to Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, etc...it's not bad switching over. I've had to do it many times. I've never been on buspar tho..so can't comment. I'm not sure what kind of track record it has. I know it didn't help my brother, but everyone is different.

I'm sorry you feel so awful. Keep letting your doctor know your badly you're feeling. You shouldn't have to suffer this much, especially if the dreaded poop out has happened.

Keep posting..you're not alone.
