Worth trying Parnate if Nardil failed?

Posted by girlnterrupted78 on August 7, 2009, at 17:21:11

I fit the criteria for atypical depression, although I have only been diagnosed with "unipolar depression" and social anxiety. My worst symptom is hypersensitivity to interpersonal rejection.

After trying several SSRI's and a few other AD's, I gave Nardil a 1-year trial, and sadly, it didn't do anything for me. Except it made me gain tons of weight.

So now I'm seeing a new doctor and he said he wants to give Parnate a trial, and he also wants to augment it with Abilify.

I'm just wondering whether others with similar diagnoses have tried this combo (or even just Parnate alone) and what your results have been. Or if anyone has more info about Parnate, anything on the topic would be appreciated.

Thanks.

There are people whom will respond to one MAOI and not respond to another. I guess that is as much rationale as one would need to give Parnate a try. Some of the earlier work on MAOIs and atypical depression found that both Parnate and Nardil were effective. Even social anxiety can be responsive to Parnate, even though Nardil is considered to be the first choice.

If Parnate monotherapy does not work, will you be adding anything to it as an augmenter? If you experience a brief or partial response, you might want to consider it.

Thanks. Yes, my doctor is already considering Abilify as an augmenter. I've tried Abilify in the past as an SSRI augmenter, and it did nothing, but I might give it a try to augment Parnate.

Have you tried both, Nardil and Parnate, and what were your results?

Some seem to respond well adding nortriptyline to parnate.

I'd say parnate is worth trying if you augument it with something that insures proper sleep. What's said about Parnate is "It always work" that's probably a bit biased, but I'm sure it's better than 90& of the AD's out there and it dosn't make you gain weight.

I would augment it with nortriptyline befor trying Abilify again.

Hopefully Parnate alone at the right dosage works well for you.

Abilify works well for some babblers here. Seems getting the right dose is key. Some respond to as low as 1-2mgs, others take 10-20mgs.

Parnate might work for you!

I hope you'll find the right combination of meds soon. Keep posting,

Was just wondering what you decided to do... have you started on Parnate? How is it going so far?

Nardil at 90mg per day eventually worked very well for me, but if I relaxed in the evening or weekends (I live alone), I'd hit rock bottom. I changed to Parnate titrated up to 50mg per day over 6 weeks and I feel dreadful. I also take 50mg nortriptylinie in the evening, but may change to doxepin. After suppressing dreaming the dam has burst and now get deluged with terrible dreams. I'm going to take 10mg Parnate alterate days to maintain the dose to see if I improve. My sleep has been completely messed up, ie sleeping in the day, insomnia at night
