A good Los Angeles psychopharmacologist?

Posted by ZeitGuest on April 4, 2006, at 22:57:19

I'm looking for a good psychopharmacologist in Los Angeles.

I'd like to find a doc that is current on the latest developments in treatment for depression and social anxiety. Does anybody have any recommendations?

There are a number of psychopharmacologists in practice at NPI at UCLA and also have offices in Westwood Village. Some are still accepting patients. Call the ACCESS center at 1-800-825-9989 or 310-825-9989 for outpatient or inpatient referrals.

Some of the NPI websites are being revamped, but the access center remains there. Standard of care is fairly high -- I dont know what insurance plans you have, that you would have to negotiate with the hospital.

I know of one in Orange Co., but he's very expensive and doesn't take most, if any, insurances:

Zetin, Mark MD
12443 Lewis St # 101
Garden Grove, CA 92840

Also, in San Marino (LA County):

Pylko, Timothy J MD
2400 Mission St
San Marino, CA 91108

Anyone know of a Los Angeles-based p-doc who would be willing to consider prescribing EMSAM?

I would still go with a teaching hospital like I mentioned.. I dont know what part of LA you're in, but UCLA, USC, or UCI have good care. If you're looking for someone on the forefront, which EMSAM is, you're more likely to find someone at a teaching hospital where new treatments are being examined. Just be careful not to drug shop, psychiatrists don't really like that. You can phrase it more differently like have you had success with patients with EMSAM or something, or know of studies being done, but it goes the same with any medication.

Just my 2c

Wish you well

Cheers

in pasadena i worked with a dr. christian rutland on congress st.
quite knowledgable, but expensive, no insurance, cash only payments, and at times confusing and impossible.
a true scientist, relishing in the lifestyle.

I formaly lived in LA. Both of these docs were very big on MAOI's, long before Emsam. I am sure they both not only will prescribe it for you, but probably have free samples. They both studied at UCLA. The easiest way to get an MAOI like Emsam from one of these guys is to bring in your list of failed meds and let them suggest an MAOI. When you give them no other choices from having tried everything already, they will quickly go for the MAOI. I imagine any pdoc will prescribe EMSAM as the first MAOI to try now, since it has reduced liability without the diet. Good luck!!

I've used Dr. Robert H. Gerner's services for 10 years, and have referred a number of people, including relatives, to him, too. There have been some amazing success stories. He's been very good at spotting a mis-diagnosis or poor choice of meds, as well as offering good advice about how to "tweak" medications' effects through the use of complimentary treatments, such as light therapy. He doesn't take insurance, so one of the best recommendations I can give him is to say he's been worth every penny I've spent to see him! I find myself urging people to go see him with the same ardor that some born-again Christians use to proselytize for Jesus.

Last I **heard** he was in some sort of major trouble -- legal or ethical. Anyone else know anything?

EMSAM is FDA-approved for depression and non-scheduled. It should thus be easy to obtain from just about any doctor.

When someone is accused of "doctor shopping", they were invariably obtaining _controlled_ substances (usually opioids) from multiple doctors simultaneously.

The concern you're alluding to involves the unfortunate branding as "drug-seeker", which is a risk one faces by asking for a controlled substance, which EMSAM is not.

Hi,

I need someone in the LA area who is top-notch, someone conversant with academic literature and who might know what to do with bizarre, treatment-resistant conditions.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
