How long for Trazodone to kick in?

Posted by X-ray on February 8, 2009, at 3:15:10

Hi,

Trazodone has a good reputation as a sleep aid.
I'm going to try this drug myself soon.

I have one question to those who know about traz.
How long does it take for this drug to kick in?

Suppose that I take 50-100 mg of Trazodone at ten o'clock.
At what time will I fall asleep?

Best regards,
X-ray

Hey...traz works fast (ie the amount of time for you to feel something like aspirin start working)...from 15-30min. It will come on slow with a lil buzz in your head, sometimes a stuffy nose, eyes will feel heavy, you'll feel groggy. These will intensify and put you out (youre looking at max an hour here). You may get a lil anxiety or aggitated stimulation type of a feeling which will pass but if it lingers for any length of time, like taking to much time to work both that night and the weeks to come, then you want to up the dose a lil. Traz will be stimulating at a less than effective dose (your effective dose not the literature) but once you cross that dose its like a tranquilizer...youre out dude. I like it, took it for over a year on effexor now back on it with nardil. You may get a lil cognitive dulling or feeling of groggyness or "slowness" the next day for the first week...but will pass. Down the road (months) you may need to up the dose but anything under 100 is good for sleep

cheers

I've been on Trazodone for sleep for the past 8 years. Usually, with 50-100 mgs on board I am asleep in an hour.

I'm female so I don't have to worry about priapism, but I do get a nasty stuffy nose, which tells me I'll be asleep soon. Nasal spray helps with that side effect.

Taking it with food makes it work faster, and you may notice you actually get hungry once you take it.

I sleep like a rock with Traz on board, and I have no grogginess the next day. I wake up when my alarm goes off, if not slightly before.

Seldom.

Hi Phillipa, hmm tough one. It's different than benzos...for me benzos are like a nice lil relaxing drop down into sleep where traz feels more like a high dose sedative antihistamine...just slows everything down, movement, thinking...a crashing kind of feel until your out like a light. It's not a relaxing drop into sleep to me anyway. Now the quality of sleep for me is good...seems to promote good rem or restful sleep...ive always felt well rested when i wake up after my head clears from it (after the first few days of groggyness).

Well, like most drugs, I'm sure individual results will vary.

I've described it before as a sleep bomb. As Mycoe indicated it's not a peaceful, lulling to sleep.

It might help for sleep but it can give you an eye splitting headache the next day. Also did zero for my depression. I had to stop at 50mg because if I were to go higher I would be sleep walking the next day.

As for how long it takes someone to sleep, that's for a sleep lab to determine, its sort of metaphysical in a way unless you can tape yourself in infrared, but it can be anything from 20 minutes to 45 minutes, as a normal range.

As for when you start feeling groggy from Trazodone on an emptier stomach I would say 30 minutes.

Trazodone --second-day depression??

Did anyone experience second-day depression from Trazodone and does this side-effect go away?

Thanks,
Roslynn
