Selegeline Patch

Posted by julee on April 22, 2008, at 22:41:59

Hi -
I really want to try the Selegeline patch. I've looked for posts on here but I wasn't able to pull up any recent posts about the patch. I have chronic depression. I'm extremely emotionally sensitive and it drives me crazy lol... drives every one else crazy too I think. But I read where the Selegiline can help that. I tend to have insomia in general and have also read where this drug can cause insomnia. I was on Zoloft but have weened myself off of Zoloft. I did like the sort of apethetic affect of Zoloft - which helped the over sensitivity. I guess I'm wondering if many people on this site have tried Selegiline and if so - has it worked and what have the side effects been? Any info is appreciated - thanks!

Hi, did you try searching under Emsam, the trade name? I know a while ago on the board there were some folks trying it.

I haven't tried the selegiline patch - only oral selegiline up to 10 daily, and single doses up to 40 mg (sublingual). The only side-effect that is obvious enough to be readily identified is a diminished pupil size.

In my experience, reboxetine greatly reduces emotional sensitivity, even after you quit it, so that may be worth a try too.

40 milligrams sunliqual? did that have an AD effect? You should watch your diet at those doses.

I only tried that once, to check if there was a rapid antidepressive effect, but such an effect was not highly apparent. I was taking the usual methylphenidate + modafinil at the time, so as I expected, that combination seems relatively safe with MAO inhibition. I probably will not pursue MAOIs further for some time, as I'm getting ready to try memantine.

Thanks so much - good to know you had little to no side effects on the oral medication. I would think if there were any side effects it would be with that. So that is good to know. Thanks also - I will check out Reboxetine.

Thank you!

Hi Julee,

Maybe you've found the info you need, but in case not, I'll tell you about my experience with EMSAM (Transdermal selegeline). Overall, it has a very good anti-depressive effect for me, but it took about six weeks to fully kick in. That's longer than other meds I've used. But for me, the side-effect profile is better than others. Effexor made me lose too much weight (I'm skinny already) and killed my libido. Wellbutrin made me cranky and agitated and made my hair fall out. Not something I'm willing to live with. The things I think may be related to EMSAM are slightly increased acne and mild GI distress, but I can live with both. I feel really good on this medication.

Hope that's helpful.

Blossom

Yes it helps very much - thank you Blossom!
I get too hyper on ssri's and i'm hoping this doesn't keep me awake too much. Doesn't sound like that was one of your side effects.

I am going to talk to my doc tomorrow about starting it. I think I have atypical depression and I'm hoping I respond better to this than the myriad of other stuff I've been on.

Thanks so much!
