forgot zyprexa...what to do?

Posted by B2chica on December 13, 2007, at 8:12:25

i think i forgot zyprexa last night (10mg).
this morning i went to my pill boxes and on the counter i found a spare pill...i assume i took it out and forgot to take it. i fell asleep at 8:00 woke up at 11:00 and went to take it but probably got side tracked and forgot.
i REALLY need this pill.
i think the half life is like 30hours but will i be ok?
i do have a zydis of 5mg here at work, should i take it or 1/2 of it?
or will it be ok?

I do that with my synthroid all the time. Find that if I've been asleep can't remember what I do after that. What will happen if you forgot? Well will you know since you took it? If extra will it make you tired? Phillipa

Shouldn't be too much of a problem. You might notice some worse sleep or some nervousness but I don't think it would be dramatic. Skipping zyprexa for 3 days would be dramatic.

If it ever happens again, just take a knife and split a dose into halves or quarters. Then just take a quarter of it to tie you over until the next scheduled full dose. Of take a half dose to tie you over, depending on how much time is left before your next scheduled dose.

Phillipa, you know that it is really important to take Synthroid at the same time every day, don't you?

Maxie yes and did much better when took it with breakfast and didn't have the flucuations I do now. Should have continued to do the breakfast thing but this endo wants it when I wake in middle of night with valium. Anyway am starting to go back to my previous way as a year of this is too much. One six weeks too low next six weeks too high. The internist's way was better as he said as long as levels correct didn't matter if I ate with it or not and was stable for 9 years. Phillipa

Yes, I wouldn't worry about one day, you will feel nervous especially if it is for a preexisting anxiety spectrum disorder. Skip it. Get a pill minder and take it the next day. Or like you said, you can take it in the morning but you'll feel zonked out depending on how used to it so unless you don't have anything to do for several hours at least, I'd go with the former choice.

I wouldn't worry about missing a single dose of Zyprexa - it's when you go without for several days that bad things begin to happen -- I know from experience. Zyprexa is a thienbenzodiazapene, and while it affects different transmitters in the brain, it is a cousin to Valium and Klonopin. If you've taken either of those drugs over a long period of time, you could experience withdrawal if you suddenly stop - but you wouldn't notice it within the first day, and I'm guessing that those drugs' cousin, Zyprexa, invokes a similar kind of withdrawal experience if multiple doses are missed - but not just missing one dose. I've done that without ill effect (and I take 20-30 mg a night). I've also gone for several days without Zyprexa and all the bad stuff comes right back, and I go into a deep month long depression, even after having started the Zyprexa again. The time was really miserable for me, but it was a very educational experience, and I will not do it again - I am now quite vigilant about taking Zyprexa regularly. Maybe I could say I am physically addicted to the benzodiazapine part of the drug, but I'm totally off my rocker without it, and have been taking it for almost 8 years now - it being the only drug to ever make me act normal and stable.

Merry Christmas!
K

Actually its only in structure alone, messy coal tar like compounds are smushed together to make thienobenzodiazepines. Zyprexa has almost no affinity / (Ki > large) at GABA. But it is a curious scientific tidbit.

Coaltar in zyprexa? That's what my Mother had to rub all over her body daily for the psoriasis. So what does that mean as far as her health mental and otherwish? Phillipa

No -- I'm talking about distant relationships in chemical structures, not actual compounds. No difference. But soda does have some wood rosin compounds in it sometimes for binding or whatever, perfectly safe ("glycerol ester of wood rosin".).

Did I understand you correctly? You take 20-30mg of Zyprexa at night?
