I do not experience emotional blunting on Lexapro. I did have some emotional flatness and apathy with benzos. I didn't like the feeling.

i was put on ssri's and it prevented me from crying or having any emotions, along with taking away my true self. i have been off them for 1 year and still can't cry or have any emotions, or feel like my former self. everyday i want to die.

I could not cry on citalopram. It was a double effect. It affected my desire to cry, and even when I wanted to I physically could not cry!, just like it physically blunted orgasm, it physically stopped me from crying.
They are sometimes used in pathological crying (due to brain injury where the patient crys even when not sad)

They definitely blunt my emotions, making crying nearly impossible.

I have never been much of a cryer. But I find that Lexapro does not stop me from welling up for a good boohoo when it is called for. I have never actually forced myself to cry. Since crying doesn't get me anywhere with hubby, forcing a cry doesn't do me any good.
But if I "DO" want a good cry, I just look at one of my very old pets and just know that he is not going to live very much longer. He and I snuggle for a while, I cry, then feel very much better.
I hope you find those cleansing tears soon. They actually feel quite good. {{HUGS}}

It's one of the greatest drawbacks for me. No emotional release, as someone else said. I'm on Cymbalta now, which is better, but on Effexor it was more difficult to cry, or to feel much of anything for that matter.
I don't cry and I can't get angry over things that I should. Not the every day stuff, like my family driving me crazy--I can be angry about that--but other things, no.

I still have the "edge" if I need it, but temper it. If there is REALLY a reason, I can still get angry enough to leave battered and bruised emotions and psyches behind. Before Lexapro, I used to be called "Queen B*tch of the Universe". My motto was "Places to go. People to piss off." I can't imagine being that person any more. When I think about the hell I put my family through for 25+ years, THAT is what makes me cry.

I don't cry on lithium as much as i used
to pre-treatment; but when something sad
happens, such as my recent marital discord,
i cry me a river. Maybe, that's because lithium

Hi there. It all depends on the AD for me. On Zoloft I can't. Plain and Simple. It's really weird too. And it's too bad because other than that Zoloft worked rather well for me. Lost lots of weight on it too!
So I don't think it's just you. I find most AD's both SSRI's and SNRI's make me apathetic and not care about anything. That's why I am having such a hard time trying to find something to help combat the depressive part of my bipolar I.

Oddly enough, I couldn't cry in response to extreme sadness such as the death of my parents, but I can cry at weird things like heart-warming movies. Never made any sense to me.

I'm on 300 mg Wellbutrin and I cry everyday. However, it is controlled now (I used to have to duck into the bathroom at work and cry) and usually only happens when I'm driving and a sad song comes on or if I'm sitting around my house being anxious.

Hey there! If you're having these symptoms on Wellbutrin (especially the anxiety), then chances are the Wellbutrin is making your anxiety worse. It's known to do that and has to me. Even at 1/4 of a 75mg tablet!
Just something to think about... I would re-evaluate your meds and think of maybe adding something to it to counteract the anxiety.

Thanks, Phillipa! I'm just very sorry you were in the hospital. :( That's terrible, but I can relate. I'm just glad you no longer take Wellbutrin.
I have been noticing more and more that if I control My anxiety, My Bipolar doesn't bother me. As crazy as that sounds, it's true. I am now wondering if I'm even truly Bipolar?
I have had a very affluent and well respected Psychiatrist tell me that the core of all my issues/disorders is Fear. Period. That if I can gain control of that, then the rest will follow. Meaning everything else will even out. And to be honest he seems to be right on the money!
Hmmm... Just a speculation. But I can say that Wellbutrin is stimulating and that when I get anxious I cry a lot! So I really feel that's the culprit with Princess777Vegas.

When I first started Prozac I couldn't cry. Later, I think especially after reducing the dose, that "suide effect" went away.

I am wondering why you are glad that Phillipa is off wellbutrin. I am on 150 mg wellbutrin XL and 2ml Xanax. I don't like it. My pdoc wants to add Celexa tomorrow. I really don't like the wellbutrin, it makes me more anxious and I've been on Xanax for 6 yrs and it doesn't seem to help the anxiety anymore. I don't want to start an SSRI, but my doc hasn't suggested anything else. I'm diagnosed with chronic depression. Any suggestions?

Surviving luvox is the least stimulating SSRI maybe try it? I know some like remeron but it did nothing for me. Can you up you benzo for a while? And what else have you tried antidepressant wise? Who wants me off or is glad I'm off wellbutrin couldn't find it. Love Phillipa

I've never even heard of luvox and my pdoc has never mentioned it. Guess I should check into it. I have tried about all the SSRI's except Prozac...my doc won't let me because of my liver...it's actually fine now, but had a few negative tests at one time. I was a zombie on remeron. I can up my Xanax as much as I want, I just get too tired at high doses. I still have a daughter at home and have to have enough energy to take care of her. Paxil was the worst...I'll never take that again. Actually, nortriptyline worked better than anything else, but my doc doesn't prescribe it because it's an older drug and he likes the newer ones. He also thinks it has stronger side effects...but I didn't experience any. Lexapro put me in bed day and night. I started Celexa this morning, along with 150 wellbutrin XL and the Xanax. Sure hope this works...I'm tired of it all.
