Valium, xanax, lunesta, luvox are they dangerous t

Posted by Phillipa on February 13, 2007, at 12:49:13

Since I have been on all these newest lunesta. Do you think this combo is dangerous? I'm on cut down to l5mg of valium, cut luvox to 50mg from 75mg, .5 of xanax and 3mg of lunesta. And what would you expect from this combo? I have tiredness in the am and then severe anxiety later and into the evening. All my meds are pm. Thanks Phillipa ps sorry to be such a pest lately oh and they are trying to regulate my thyroid at the same time. Went from normal to hyper to high normal now.

I imagine there would be warnings against excessive sedation- but that doesn't sound like a problem. I wonder if your late day anxiety has to do with meds wearing off?

Well, I have a couple somwhat practical thoughts- is any part of your thyroid treatment activating or sedating? And also, would it at all make sense to stagger any of your meds so that you feel more alert in the morning and less anxious in the evening?

Phillipa do you take thyroid meds and if so at night? Maybe taking it at night could be too stimulating for sleep? Maybe taking it in the morning would give you more energy then.

Also, a friend of mine's doctor told her that she needs to take her thyroid meds on an empty stomach and without any other meds. Just a thought. Peace...Saturn.

No, that combo isn't particularly dangerous (in the sense of being fatally toxic) Phillipa. I'm just surprised that you're still so anxious given that Luvox potentates the benzos and prolongs their half-lives. This seems to add credence to the idea you are suffering rebound anxiety as a result of having developed a substantial tolerance to the benzos and being in a state of semi-withdrawal for most of the daytime.

Saturn that's where I ran into the problem see for l0 years all my docs Gp's too said I could take it with food but I eat yougurt with my cereal which has calcium and the synthroid binds with calcium hence less throid is absorbed. So he said when I wake-up in the middle of the night to take it then when my stomach is empty. Doesn't help when my throid is jumping around from normal to hyper to now high normal. I really think you're right about the time as Sunday I couldn't remember if I took it or not and slept better have this feeling I didn't so took a half a tab and then ate. I hate to set an alarm for taking a med. Love Phillipa

Phillipa...you are *never* a 'pest' on here!! I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your meds. I'd highly suggest getting some of those more sedating meds towards the evening, since that is when you experience most of your anxiety. Can you possibly get up to 1 mg of Xanax in the evening?? (or .5 bid?) It's just this med is a REAL lifesaver for both anxiety and depression. If your doc won't go for that, you certainly need something else. Maybe Valium up to 2-3 x a day, at a slightly higher dose? BTW..your Luvox likely helps with anxiety, now that you have been on it for some time. Try to avoid going up and down on the doses. Maybe go to 2x a day dosing? Luvox increases melatonin levels as well, which also have an anti-anxiety effect.

Make sure you get your thyroid checked "to a T", because even just taking like a small microgram more of thyroid med can majorly increase anxiety, restlessness, etc..if you don't need it.
Best wishes,
Jay

Jan, that's another thing. I remember you saying a while ago that your thyroid was hyperactive after the last test - so why are you still taking Synthroid? Wouldn't you feel better if the dose was lowered or stopped altogether until this phase passes?

Guys I'm seeing an endocrinologist who is in the process of upping and downing the synthroid. First went down from .l25 to .ll2 five days and .88 other two days. When it still was hper on.88 still to high so cut out one pill a week then it got in the high normal range so now .88 seven days a week. Can't remember when next blook draw is but I have a wierd auto antibody too.

Jay you say to split the luvox or don't cut down and go back to 75mg is that correct? And the pdoc had said I could split the valium throughout the day or use the xanax during the day and not at night. Only reason using at night is that my eyes I guess cause of anxiety are reading to fast across the page in bed at night hence the xanax kicks in quick so it's not as bad. Thats.25mg maybe save the other for during the day? Love Jan/Phillipa whatever

try reading with a piece of plain white paper held under each line as you read it -- it helps
also, if you have trouble with the reading in bed make sure there is a plain surface under the book -- no busy prints on linens
