Brain function - technical questions- help!

Posted by Jimmyboy on November 21, 2006, at 15:02:31

Hi,

I got a SPECt scan last week, I know they are not real helpful to figure out what is going on , but can someone please explain what some of these finding mean.. I would be very greateful

1. " Salt and pepper" pattern distributed diffusely throughout both cerebral hemispheres. "

2. Significant temporal lobe asymmetry - left is much less active than the right"

3. Deep gray matter activation is present in left thalmic region "

4. In early phase images there are activation foci identified in the mid left parietal region and right prefrontal region"

I have no idea what this means .. if anyone can decipher I would love to hear from you ..

I don't have time to look it up right now, but I will later and get back to you. Here's the stuff I think I'm remembering correctly:

The right prefrontal region is involved with mood, and associated with depression. (I may have this backwards, but I think it's the right.)

I think the thalmic region -- damn my brain, memory's shot right now thanks to meds -- houses the structures that act as sort of traffic monitors for attention and timekeeping duties, and maybe some movement behaviors? I need to look that up. The asymmetry isn't out of average, though. Most of us are pretty asymmetric, men more so than women.

I'll look up the details later today, when I get home tonight, and post them then if no one else has. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I'm not sure if you know what a SPECT scan is but A Spect scan gives us info about blood flow to tissues of the body. It is diagnostic tool which can detect tumour, infection ,and other patholgies. Analyzing the amount of blood flow to an organ can help to see how the particular organ in questioning is functioning.

Not sure about this Salt and Peppr pattern, but if something is diffused throughout both hemisphers, it basically means that both sides of your brain have 'accepted' this molecule, ion, etc etc

> 2. Significant temporal lobe asymmetry - left is much less active than the right"

TL asymettry is common to all of us in certain ways.
You Left Temoral lobe is very much focused on language function (Broca's area, Wernickes area). Damage (Lesions, esp stroke) to this area can produce what is called aphasia...speah difficulties. Your Right TL, is very much geared towards fine articulation, visuo spatial phenomena etc. Asymettry just means that their is not even distribution of something, either anatomical or morphological in nature, to both lobes. Like I said, this is common to all of us in some ways.

> 3. Deep gray matter activation is present in left thalmic region "

GM is just a collection of nerve cell bodies. Your Thalamus is part of what is called the diencephalon. also included are epithalumus, hypotholamus etc. Grey matter is a site of information processing.

> 4. In early phase images there are activation foci identified in the mid left parietal region and right prefrontal region"

Phase images showe image contrast in anatomical structures
AF is just where the activation is taking place more or less.
Your Parietal love is behind your Frontal love and contains the somatosensory map- basically the different parts of your body which have specific amounts of receptors for them.
Prefrontal, just means ReALLY frontal!

Thalamaus is primarily sensory relay area, amongst many other things.
Hyothalums is geared towards hormonal release and other homeostatic functions.
Epithalamus is biological ryhthms, onset of puberty etc

I actually think woman are more lateralized than men.

My memory aint doing to well either, so we may both be wrong!
