Thalamaus is primarily sensory relay area, amongst many other things.
Hyothalums is geared towards hormonal release and other homeostatic functions.
Epithalamus is biological ryhthms, onset of puberty etc

I actually think woman are more lateralized than men.

My memory aint doing to well either, so we may both be wrong!
