Hi Ace,
Sorry to here you are feeling bad again. I was off Nardil for several months and my major atypical depression returned. I am now back on 90mg of Nardil with my standby 1mg of clonazepam. If the major depression is not gone after six weeks, I am thinking of augmentation with Lamictal.

I have not used Carbamazepine put the literature seems to indicate more use in bipolar disorder. What are your exact symptoms? I know that you mentioned what sounded like medication induced hypomania at one point on Nardil. This has happened to me at least twice on Nardil and leads me to believe my atypical depression is somewhere on the bipolar spectrum. Even though hypomania, without the influence of medication, has never happened with me. Because of my medication induced hypomania, I am thinking of augmenting the Nardil with Lamictal. I can't remember if you tried this.
Good Luck and Get Well,
Jedi

I tried Carbamazepine 600mg a couple of years ago. It did seem to help with the anxiety issue, but it made me so lethargic I couldn't get off the couch. It might have been a case of the anesthetic or anti-depressant issue (just too numbed to know your'e depressed). BTW, just started Nardil about a month ago, so I'm hoping it will work for me. Seems I'm allergic to MAO inhibitors, but if I can keep the rash that makes be look like I've been thrown into a tank of Portugese man-of-wars with antihistamines I might be ok. Depakote seems to work for me for the anxiety part, but doesn't help too much for the depression.

ace,

I've taken Carbamazepine for about 10 yrs., off and on (mostly on), at dose range from 300 to 800 mgs./day.
400mgs./day helps me greatly with anxiety and feeling mentally "solid"/"stable". If I go much higher depression starts creeping in.

It's rep. is mainly as a "top-down" mood stabilizer, but you never know - everyone's different. I've read studies where it's helped people with depression - you might be one of those! Also, sometimes helping anxiety has a secondary effect of helping depression.

Hope you get off that slippery slope fast, and back to feeling good real soon.

Best to you ace!

Carbamazepine can work mildy for depression, pretty good for anxiety and excellent for sleep - in my experience.

Not forgetting its anti manic properties.
