I respectivly disagree with Tyler. Zanax is nothing to be afraid of if the diagnosis leads the physician to prescribe. The initial amount you are taking is way higher than normaly prescibed and not helping. These are all opionions here. Go to interntet sites. Zanax is the most adictive benzo out there. I have been using benzos for 25 years. Be responsible. Seek a qualified physican. It is not working. I believe you may be suffering from a more severe ailment than fear and anxiety. Unqualified encouragement to continue down this road is irresponsible though that is not the intent of the posters. Everyone wants to seee your condition improve. Hang in there. For those who disagree with me I am willing to provide many links to support my opinion or have a MD get on here and give an opinion. I have a Masters in Psychology but do not pretend to be med expert. I am speaking from vast personal experience. IMG of Z calms fear period. Otherwise it is something more serious.

I respect your opinion, I too have been taking benzos for over 20yrs. without any problems...I would say that more than any other drugs, benzos have helped the most. I too am College Educated, however not a Psych. major.
With all due respect, We, meaning myself, Phillipa, Ace ( who is studying to become a Medical Doctor) and Ed, just to mention a few have been helping Tepi for the last 2 mos. He lives in Mexico, He isn't working, he cannot get regular good qualified Psychiatric help at this time. Just 2 wks ago he was VERY SUICIDAL! He's just starting to get better with both Ace and Ed (both very intellegent and well educated in Psychopharmacology) giving him medication advice. Phillipa and myself are Tep's good friends and are more of the 'cheer leading' part of the team. We love Tepi and are trying to help him as much as possible.
In his acute stage of fear(Diagnosed as severe social anxiety) I don't believe he's taking too much Xanax. Some Doctors prescribe much higher doses when patients are combatting an accute episode of their given illness. Telling him to stop now would be dangerously irresponsible! He will most definitely start drinking alcohol again to deaden his pain. So what's better, Nardil and Alcohol..? Or Nardil and med. to high dose Xanax? It's one or the other. The guy doesn't have $$$, he doesn't have many choices! The Xanax should and can be tapered as he gets feeling better. Alcohol w/Nardil can cause death!Unless you have a better solution, i.e. going to Mexico to get him, bring him back to the U.S. Or send him money..I don't know, Unfortunately i don't have the money to do it, or i would.
Let's don't let this become a big blown up fight to prove who's right and who's wrong. Let's work together to help Tepi through this horrible, life threating time he is experiencing.

Crazy Horse. No offense taken. We all mean well and our motives are to help. So moving forward, Together, maybe we can help. I believe that there is a deeper issue. I offered to have my friend in Mexica City call him. He will find a Psychiatrist and I will pay for it. Medical care in Mexico is reasonably cheap. When I see posts including suicide thoughts etc I dont agree that continueing Z is the solution. It only provided a few days relief. I respect all the posters on the board and was not aware that this was a two month process. Let me know what I can do. Best to you. I posted hastily out of concern and could have worded it more subtly.

Not everyone responds to benzos I'm afraid. It is *not* uncommon for people to suffer anxiety which is resistant to benzodiazepines.

Anxiety disorders can be very severe and disabling. Anxiety disorders can be just as serious (or even more serious) than other psych illnesses.

Tepi was already on long-term benzodiazepine treatment. He switched from Klonopin to Xanax to find out whether Xanax offered any advantages.

I jumped in to the middle of an ongoing crises that I was not aware of. When I saw a post including suicidal thoughts I applied my personal med template to the situation. Thought I saw a lot of softball advise which turned out not to be the case. I am fairly new to this board. My normal responses are more personal sharing. I have had debilitating anxiety that Benzos have always relieved. I am also very aware that benzos are not helpful for all, in fact there are all sorts of adverse effects that are possible. After reading Tepiacas posts I suspected our friend may be suffering from somthing other than GAD My next door neighbor is a Psychiatrist and she was going to support my opinions. With the info you have given me this is of course not appropriate. I have read your posts over the past few months and they are not only insightful but provide the moral support many need. I am serious about helping him with medical assistance. What city does he live in? Warmest regards.

Tep, drinking is not the answer. Family gatherings are diffucult for anyone much less with the problems you are dealing with. Stay sober for a few days, keep the Z to 1/4mg or 1/2 doses and lets work this out. Do you live in a major city? Do you have friends who you can talk to and support you emotionaly? Stay off the beer and keep in communication. There is a solution for you but it will not be simple or quick.

This is exactly what i feared would happen, no xanax or too little xanax to help him, and he is back to drinking. Not to mention he is on Nardil and every time he drinks he could suffer from a tyramine induced stroke! Until you can help him find a doc and help him financially, i agree with Ed ( who is a brilliant Psychopharmacologist) he needs more xanax. After he gets things under control with a new pdoc etc. he can work on tapering the xanax. But for now, to save his life he needs to use higher doses. Many Psychiatrists use 10 or more mgs. of xanax for patients in the middle of an acute psychiatric episode as Tepi is.Sincerely,

Tyler, I agree.
Tepi, please don't drink beer for right now. I would encourage you to take a xanax instead, every time you feel the need for a beer. Neither is a perfect solution (the perfect solution is no anxiety and no need to take drugs). But it is safer. Unlike beer, Xanax will not interact on your blood pressure with the Nardil and it will not cause anything near as much liver damage. You won't overdose on Xanax but you might from alcohol or if alcohol is combined with Xanax. Anyway that is my two cents.

It is important ot know we all are thinking of you and will do all we can to help. As a young adult there was no such forum and I had extreme anxiety and felt alienated. Things can and will improve if you give them time. Alcohol is a roadblock. If they have an Alchoholics Anonymous meeting near you try attending. I am not suggesting you are an alchoholic. Their only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. This will also provide an outlet for you do be with people and discuss your situation. I know many who have had AA be a turning point in there life due to the people, not the dogma. E-mail me. Let me know if their is a good PDoc near you. Im 25 , I live in a city , a big one in Mexico.
It could be said that are good doctors, but talking about MAOIs there aren´t.
