What can a hospital say on your record to your doc

Posted by rjlockhart on March 15, 2006, at 21:50:26

Ok, i have been Dying to get this out so im going to get this off my mind and stop thinking about over and over.

I went to a outpatient hostpital because my mother though that I was dependent to Dexedrine. Also i went to a outpatient facility to deal with anxiety which this woman has caused me severly. Ok this is what happened i went to the Chemical Dependecy Classes and they gave me a form and faxed it over to my doctor what they though my problems where, one of them was "amphetamine dep."

What does that now mean? Dexedrine helped me much in class, and i swear i could slap the hell out of mother (im sorry but i am just....) for doing this to me. Your ADDICTED YOUR ADDICTED.... NEVER AGAIN. God I want, she was on amphetamine in the 70's and got her self in to a hospital because she was taking them to lose weigh. I am going to having to take Accounting, hard classes, I know that, i can do it on my own, because there are people out there who can show and prove the world wrong.

What does this mean now? I cant even see my doctor because of my mother, who cancels appointments because she says she stressed and she must come, and if she doesnt than she cancels them. Its on her insurance, i've got to get out of here. I dont have a job right now, i go to collage, but its is so rough right now.

Please can someone give an explantion.

this is tramatizing to me, what in the hell happened?

God i am having now a realizion, dexedrine helped me alot my mom siezed appoinments, she is trying to be the doctor.

I am listening right now to the highway beside my house, and am listening and just thinking what happened?

Is this record from the Milwood Hospital a recommedation that goes on my whole record?

First of all i am going to tell him the WHOLE danm story, i am going to tell him what my mom has done, i am going to tell him what happened with the dexedine and i made a mistake, my mother will NOT let me go back on stimulants at all. She control the doctor, if i do not concent with her seeing him then she will not get me in for medical treatment, well she just wont call the doctor, and if i call she'll cancel.

What is going to happen?

Matt,
I really don't know what to tell you. It's hard to know what you think of the advice that folks give you when they tell you that you are of age and your mother legally cannot control your healthcare. You haven't responded to any of my posts, so I don't know if you believe me or not.

But I'll say it one more time. EVEN IF YOU ARE ON HER INSURANCE, your mother cannot legally control whether you see the doctor, what treatment the doctor prescribes, and how you follow the doc's orders.

You say she doesn't call the doc when you need to see him. Call and make an appt. yourself. You say she cancels them. Don't tell her about them. Take the bus or a cab. See a new doctor. Inform the doctor's office staff that they are not to take ANY "orders" or messages from your mother regarding your care--that any cancellation or appt., etc. must come from YOU ONLY.

I realize that if this is not how you are used to handling things, that this would be a very difficult change in behavior to make. And I realize it's bound to rock your mother's boat. But are you going to count on her to arrange for your healthcare forever? Learning to navigate your own way through the healthcare system is part of growing up. Setting effective boundaries--what is your business and what is her business, and your healthcare is NOT her business, legally, is another important skill for growing up and being independent.

I believe you've said this is your goal. What can you do to start taking steps to reach it? What do you think of this advice?

difference between dependency and addiction » rjlockhart

In reply to What can a hospital say on your record to your doc, posted by rjlockhart on March 15, 2006, at 21:50:26

There's a big gap between being dependent and being addicted. Apparently your mother has some confusion about it. The fact that you're surviving and functioning without the Dexedrine suggests strongly that you were not "addicted" to it. (And if it's prescribed by a doctor, that doctor should be making the assessments of whether or not there are dependency issues.)

But Matt? GG is right -- I've read a lot of her responses to you, that offer a lot of really good and supportive advice to you, but I don't think I've ever read a reply from you to her about her advice. Is there a reason for that? I see that you do respond to other people.

And again -- you're over 18, you have control over your medical care. You can call your doctor's office, make an appointment, and go to it alone. You can even tell the doctor's office that YOU are the only one who has authorization to cancel. And if this is just about "my mom has to pay for it," ask the office to bill you at home. And tell the doctor what's been going on. Tell the doctor that you feel as though your mother is controlling the treatment, and that you don't feel as though your needs are being met. Tell him that you want to have her excluded from the office during your appointments.

You have rights. If you choose to give those rights up, please recognize that that is a choice you have made.

Odds are, your doc will take you off--at least for the time being. I can't say if he will re-instate it or not. If you feel stimulants are vital to your well-being, you may have to see antoher doc.
