Dizziness/ vertigo

Posted by nana on November 9, 2005, at 17:45:20

Help!! I have been taking Effexor xr 75mg in the morning for approx a year now. I do have 37.5 for extra boost in the afternoon if needed. Very seldom do I take that dose. My problem is just out of the blue I will start walking after getting up from a sitting position and start to feel dizzy, the room spins like I am on a ride at the carnival, I have to stop, sit down and wait for it to stop. This last time was the worst it lasted approx 10 seconds but the nausea, slight dizziness lasted for approx 1 hr. I have been reading up on withdrawls and this sounds like a withdrawl symptom. Has anybody else had this happen to them and what did you do for it?? Any advise would be helpful.. Thxs

This is quite normal for everyone.

When you stand up your blood pressure changes for a second and it causes dizziness.

Most people never notice it or they wait a moment until it stops they carry on as normal.

You can mention it to your doc on the next visit but i'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

All the Best

There is also vertigo you can get from a virus. I had never heard of such a thing until I 'came down' with vertigo out of the blue, no other symptoms. I was in my late twenties. It was very noticible and pretty severe at first, so I saw my doctor and he told me it was probably a virus and it would go away on its own. It did. It took a while though, gradually getting better over a period of what I remember to be a few weeks or maybe over a month. Weird. It made me nauseous and I would feel like I was spinning if I moved my head in a certain way.

I had this happen to me too. But I was never told it was from a virus. I woke up one night and if I turned my head the world was spinning around. Crawled to the bathroom in the morning and husband took me to the ER. The doctor shined a light in my eyes and said yup it's vertigo. They could tell by the way my eyes reacted. Gave me a shot of Ativan 2mg and a prescriptionn for antivert. It took a few days and it gradually went away. But I was never the same again. That's when I had to start Antidespressants. And they don't work for me. But at least I'm not dizzy anymore. Fondly, Phillipa

Quite common, causing vertigo, nausea, and other unpleasant findings. The yuckiness is due to the balancing mechanism located in the inner ear isn't functioning as it should. Viral and bacterial infections effecting the inner ear can cause this.

Are you still on Effexor? If so, I would think withdrawal symptoms would not be the cause. And, if you are still on it and have been for a year, it would seem unlikely to me Effexor would be the culprit.... but, I try to never say never either.

Phillipa, that's a very strange story.

Are you saying that started a depression for you?

What the heck was in that 'antivert' prescription??

Or do you think there's a connection between the vertigo itself and the depression?

Ever since I took paxil this has been a problem for me. It started with the paxil and has never gone away. I think it could be med related.

I have no idea. I just know that when I became hypothyroid at first the synthroid helped me. A month or two later the vertigo occurred. And after that I could barely get out of bed. Who know? I don't. Fondly, Phillipa
