Clonazepam+excercise=nausea?

Posted by superman on November 6, 2005, at 22:36:15

Got incredibly nauseus today. Excercise usually energizes and makes me feel GOOD.

I'm noticing a trend; whenever i take any kind anti-anxiety med (or effexor) I am unable exercise (otherwise I get the worst naseau which is accompanied by violent bouts of vomiting) Ah!.

I love my clonazepam (i'll add another post describing an experience characterisitic of what it does for me).

But I NEED my excercise (enjoyment of sports and outdoors, numerous benifits of lifting weights, and so on). It is one of the best things for my mood AND anxiety (espec. Social).

I'd like to take clonazepam on a regular basis, but it doesnt seem possible to so while continuing to take part in any physical activity.

Any suggestions? Should I just stick to taking as needed and time so it doesnt interfere with any excercise? Are there any anti-anxieties that won't do this? Can I take gravol (drammamine) to prevent the nausea? Will the nausea go away after being on it for a while.

(note: the nausea ONLY exists with excercise, and the excercise is usually rather intense. Otherwise almost no side effects).

Also, how often can I take clonzepam as needed without getting any withdrawl symptoms (general average if anyone knows)?

Ah!

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any comments.

Ty

I take klonopin every night and have for years. Doses ranging from 1 to 3mgs. On occation I take .25 to .5 during the day (before a flight, things like that).

I don't have any trouble excersizing, but I'm not sedated from during the day from my night dose (which is enough to get me through the day). After a while with regular use there doesn't seem to be any side affects for me. I just feel normal, though at times I wonder if I get a little depressed.

As far as withdrawls, yes, if you want to get off it you can't quit cold turkey. But you can taper down if you ever want off. I've done it before and drop by .25 every week or so.

I've tried it as needed, but it didn't work as well for me. Pluse I didn't care for the doses during the day.

By far klonopin has helped more with anxiety than any other drug. I've tried pretty much all of them except MAOI's.

If prn basis works, great. If not you may want to consider taking it daily. All I can say is before I took it years ago I was practically house bound. Now I own a business and a home.

Good luck!

It depends what is causing the neasea. There are 3 areas that control the vomiting reflex : substance P, dopamine and 5HT3 receptors.

Most stimulant neasea is dopamine/gaba inbalance so it is correctlable with something to dapen dopamine a bit.

Motion sickness is usually dopamine as well, so it can respond to antihistamine drugs to stop vertigo.

substance P is usually some sort of inflamation or toxin mediated, such as a virus. It is much harder to stop this type of vomit reflex, neurontin, emend and lyrica can though.

5t3 is everything else i guess. serotonin mediated.

In the end its all connected probably.

Sounds like motion sickness (vertigo-type?).

Anxiety/panic mediated vomiting is substance P, and dopamine.

You could try benadryl and test if its vertigo type, stress type, will usually not respond to this.

Everytime you vomit you lose lots of potassium, so if you dont replete the potassium it will make it worse over time. pedialyte or gatorate is a good choice, or bananas or OJ.

Never heard of a benzo making anyone nauseous. Do you have a virus? Fondly, Phillipa

PLease dont ever stop the exercising under any conditions because if the truth be told that is probably helping more with your emotional issues than any medication.

As far as medications making you nausea, that is a question that no one on this board can really answer because every med affects everyone differently. I have taken Clonzapem (3mg/day) for eight years and have nothing but great things to say about.

If anything is affecting you, I would say its the SSRIs. For starters, perhaps try taking your meds at a different time of day.

PLease dont ever quit exercising. And please keep updating us on how you feel.

I agree about excersizing. I think it's the single best thing you can do to feel your best both mentally and physically. There are so many positive benefits to it. My doctor said if they could bottle excersize in pill form it would be the best treatment/seller for depression and anxiety.

I'd strongly recomend doing whatever it takes to excersize, particularly cardio workouts. When I do it, my mood is always better, anxiety too. When I don't, I can feel it. When I need to work out the most is when I lease feel like doing it, but I just make myself as I know when I'm done I'll feel better.

Good luck.....

Thanks guys. Hey Lunesta, great info. Very informative ;).

I'm certain the nausea was a result of the meds + excercise. While on effexor, the exact same thing would happen to me. It was not only very painful everytime it happened, but it was also very embarassing, and as a result of these two facts it forced me to become very sedentary. And yes, I agree excerise is perhaps the best anti-depressant/anxiolytic going, so this was definitely grounds to discontinue the drug. And of course not everyone may experience this same effect from the drug as me, so by no means should anyone generalize my one individual experience and be persuaded not to give it a chance.

As far as my experience with benzo's + excercise = nausea, I believe the fact I also take parnate has something to do with it. I'm curious what how the excercise fits into the equation??? Isn't it common for "drug-free" (ha!) individuals to get nauseus if they completely over-exert themselves... (thinking untrained athlete running a 400m at full, or a long distance runner losing his or her lunch after a race).???

Anyway, I'm rambling again, but thanks guys.

I don't take clonazepam, but I have taken Effexor for anxiety before, and when I exercised, I would feel really bad afterwards, starting a few hours after the exercise, with stomach aching and headache. Often, I would feel depressed or anxious the day after. My anxiety would sometimes manifest itself in nausea.

I knew it was related to the meds- it had never happened to me before - and my pdoc said he never heard of the s/e, though he hypothesized it was maybe because exercise made me metabolize my meds more quickly , which was throwing me out of whack.

Regardless, over time I have learned to exercise in moderation (doing lower-impact exercise for longer has always been better than short duration, high-impact workouts), and to exercise only every other day so I can give my body the chance to recover and my meds a chance to get back to normal. I had to increase my medication dose very slightly as well once I started exercising regularly over a long period of time (6 months).

Hope you figure it out.
Best,
jflange
