Effexor + Alcohol = ????????

Posted by cablegirl on November 8, 2005, at 15:04:12

I already know that alcohol is a "depressant" and of course Effexor is an "anti-depressant".

On the insert that comes with the Effexor it says in one place to "limit" alcohol. Then further down it stated to "avoid" alcohol.

I do not drink on a daily basis, nor am I a heavy drinker, but I do like to relax on the weekends and have a few beers or glasses of wine.

Will this make my Effexor not work?????

I am not a pro - not by far - but after years of remission - when depression punched me solidly without advising me - Effexor (xr) was the drug I was prescribed.

I did not tell my pdoc that I have a drinking, ummm ... ummm..... issue? The drug did not work for me. (For many "side-effect" reasons, alchoholism not one of them, without trying to dodge my problem)

But the point I would like to make is that I cannot see how your casual and unaffected, ocassional drinking will stop the AD working for you. It does not appear that you are doing anything "out of the norm" or for that matter, irresponsible.

However, this is just my opinion. Naturally - alcohol and any AD should be taken together with extreme caution.

Hey Cablegirl!

Well I have both drank heavily and taken Effexor at the same time....

I don't know if alcohol lessens the effect of Effexor as in it actually lowers levels of it in your blood (or brain/however it works biochemically), or if it psychologically stops it working (if you understand what I mean).

But as far as I went it was fine, you just have to watch out because you get drunker quicker on less alcohol that you were used to (which took me unawares a couple of times!), and also you get worse hangovers. Or they FEEL alot worse anyway.

The leaflets always err on the side of caution I guess. but just take it easy.

Actually, now I come to remember it, I did have to drink whilst on effexor -- it was weird, I got this really 'chemically' feeling or 'tinny' feeling if I didn't have one or two every couple of days tyo make me feel more like myself.

Strange huh.

I'm afraid to stop for what you mentioned. (i.e feeling lousy).

Thanks for sharing.
