sleep paralysis - night terror

Posted by rjlockhart98 on July 8, 2005, at 11:20:48

Ok last night i had the most horrifying experience i have had in a while.

In October 2004 i had severe night terrors that there was a presence in the room, a slip second I saw a figure trying to touch me, and moaned. I couldnt do anything, i was paraylized, but i was AWAKE. i started to try to move something in my body, my leg, toe, head. I could NOT speak. I felt that i couldnt break, my respitory system was suppressed like the rest of my body. I FINALLY GOT my leg to move, then yelled "oh my god" turned on the light and started praying to god to protect me, against all harm. I researched all the web, and found numerous reports of similar occurances that have been happening sense the middle ages, the 'old hag' syndrome with sudden death have been reported. Some myth about a witch sitting on your chest and suppressing your breathing. I dont want this to kill me.

WHne this would happen i would pray everynight, when it did happen i would say in my mind 'in the name of GOD! get out!' after that i would almost have a siezure, my body would shake, it would leave soon, i would have to work my leg until i got some sort of movement.

Last night i had another sleep paralysis around 12:20, i prayed to god in my mind sense i couldnt talk. I was suppressed, everything. I prayed god please make someting move, finally my finger, then arm jerked, i regained control.

I feel im going crazy trying to talk to God, during this, trying to hear a voice... this is what really has made me gone bezerk today.

I have read that medications such as Diazepam have been used to treat this condition, but it mostly in children.

I take Clonazpeam, and Temazepam, still it happened.

Does anyone have any similar conditions?

I have and still do have this on occasion.
It is the pits! The struggle to try to wake is unbelievable!

The thing that has helped me when it happens is that I realize I am dreaming and that it will resolve. It still sux but less panic.

Getting your sleep reguated properly will help. Ambien has worked wonders too. It seems to cut down on dreaming for me.

Peace,
Kaye

I experience sleep paralysis a lot myself. I feel like my eyes are open and it seems like I see reality but I cannot move. I don't know if my eyes are really open, but it seems very real. I struggle so very hard to wake up but I cannot and it is scary. Sometimes I say to myself that I'm dreaming, but I still feel like desparately waking up. It is scary, but just try to tell yourself that it is only a dream.

I find that if you remember the exact layout of the room in question before you go to sleep (eg if the door is open or closed, light on or off etc) that normally in the dream some small detail is not correct. This enables you to recognize that you are dreaming earlier, as it is much easier to wake up before the real terror begins. I also find that once you gain control over them that they go away...

I've had nightmares every night pretty much my entire life though so I've had quite a bit of practice!!

Hope you manage to beat it.

no my eyes are open, i think its when you come right out of REM sleep..... your paraylzed. My room looks like it would when i wake up, the clock ticking beside me.

One time that really scared me, i tried to take a nap around 3:00 which i never can sleep during the day, but i did get to sort of a light sleep.

GRAHHK! I HAVE GNATS IN MY HOUSE! it flew into my eye! hold on....... i got wash it out.....bathroom

Anyways, i was paralyzed and i knew it, i kept hearing this laughing sound, like something flew by laughing. I thought i was dreaming, or by LEGEND it was some spirit playing around. I took it was my imagination.

I have had some that i have forgotten about in the night, i tell myself to forget about it, but i still can recall some of it. Wierd.....

Oh yes - sorry know what you mean...Not quite with it at the moment.
Very hard to wake up from and very suffocating... and seems to go on forever?
Not nice and very hard to control seeing as you're aware yet not quite all there.
Is this more what you mean??
Quite alot of time when I get these I'm also either too hot or have way low blood sugar. Thankfully not often..
Have you tried setting a really loud alarm clock - scares the sh*t out of you, but it may give you a sense of security???
Anyway it's not nice and I hope you get rid of them soon.
Sorry I can't be of anyway more help - but my thoughts are with you.

PS If you should ever have a problem with nightmares or lucid dreaming...?!:-)

PPS Okay so I'm supposed to be doing my thesis... but I got interested... You probably know all this stuff already - but I thought I'd include it anyway:

http://www.wintersteel.com/Sleep_Paralysis.html

This site lists causes and stuff

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

So does this one - it's an encyclopaedia

Excuse the less than helpful comments, bit dead at the moment.

My son who's 15 has had this. It first happened when he was 8. Scared the sh*t out of the poor little sod. He experiments with lucid dreaming on purpose now though.

I think sleep paralysis is normal occasionally. Having it regularly probably isn't normal though and I would think it's a product of the severe anxiety you suffer. I've been told you get it only when you sleep on your back (huh! what if you turn on to your back in your sleep yeah I know)

I have had this happen about three times - terrifying, because i couldn't breathe! I finally forced myself to flip over on my side out of sheer willpower, and started breathing again. To note, at the time i was under severe stress in my life and was not eating or sleeping properly. I have not had it happen since I got back on a sensible diet and sleeping routine. Good luck
