Has anyone ever managed to lose weight on Nardil?

Posted by KaraS on May 2, 2005, at 22:21:32

Is it even possible? I think I remember an old post where someone said that they were able to control their weight by sticking to a very low carb diet.

Hi,
If you are atypically depressed, why not? I assume the drug treat all the symptoms and when you on it you ironically lose weight.

I just started Nardil. Does the weight gain correlate with increased appetite, or is it completely metabolic (eek)?

Or maybe both? I think someone posted something recently about Nardil's effect on blood sugar. Because it keeps the blood sugar low, your body cries out for carbs and sweets to provide blood sugar.... but you probably know all that.

Nope, I did not know that, thanks. :)

Good for me to know, too, because I'm extremely sensitive to blood sugar fluctuations and have a really hard time thinking clearly and acting properly when my blood sugar is too low. I've taken a glucose tolerance test once, and it was normal, but just barely not hypoglycemic, IIRC.

I wonder if taking any of the supplements out there that have been shown to normalize blood sugar would help with the Nardil weight issue. Thusfar, though, I don't seem to be eating that much more than usual, I'm just paranoid that now that "usual" has become "too much" since starting Nardil.

Same here. I'm hypoglycemic without any medication to cause it. I think that if/when I try Nardil I'll at least take some chromium. Maybe in your case Nardil isn't having much of an effect on your blood sugar. You don't seem to be craving sweets like others here have described.

FWIW, someone here once posted that they kept their weight under control on Nardil by staying on a low carb diet. Also, I recently read a post on the Yahoo MAOI board from someone who just lost 23 pounds doing the Weight Watchers program while on Nardil. So it's definitely possible to lose weight on it, probably a bit more difficult though.

Do you take chromium or any other supplements to help with your blood sugar? I was thinking about Gymnemna Sylvestre (sp?) too. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe we should move this to alternative.

My weight affects my self-esteem a lot (I have some sort of "adonis complex" I think), which is kinda crazy because I am 6'2" and 180lbs. I am scared of gaining weight on Nardil w/o an increased appetite.
I would work on this with my therapist, but the list of things to work on that are more important is kinda long right now given the meds now allow me to actually affect positive changes, heh. ;)

Life Extension Foundation sells Glucosol, you can find it on their site. What about Metformin (glucophage)?

Yes, I take chromium because I'm hypoglycemic. (Stay away from the picolinate version though.) I've never heard of Gymnemna Sylvestre.

I hear you. That's one of my big fears in trying Nardil but I am encouraged that some people have been able to maintain or even lose weight while on it.

:-) Only you can judge what the priority is for you. I have a feeling that if you started gaining a significant amount of weight, the priorities might change.

I will ask my doctor about this, and also consult with a family friend who's one of those young "hip"-type shrinks, although he once told me when I was asking about Depakote and weight that in almost all of his patients, simply controlling carb intake and exercising moderately kept the weight under control. I think he said sometimes he'd throw in a little phentermine, etc., but that it really usually isn't necessary.

Isn't Metformin sold as a drug that mimics the effects of calorie restriction?
