G*d! I love Risperdal!

Posted by Dinah on April 12, 2005, at 0:51:38

I'm taking it frequently short term to calm work related agitation, and it's working wonderfully. I feel reasonably calm, focussed, and more alert than for a while now. Actually that may have more to do with boycotting Depakote for a while. And this just days after I felt so low I could barely function. I'm not functioning great, but better than I have in months for sure.

I actually got a compliment from my boss on my calm manner and charming phone attitude. He said he wanted some of whatever I was on. I wonder if I should suggest an antipsychotic? :))

I'm a big fan of low dose atypicals for anxiety because unlike benzos, they don't tend to blunt cognition, and a tolerance doesn't usually develop.

They also seem to reach deeper than benzos do. A deeper in the gut sense of calm.

i really want to try an antipschotic like this now. i even have lots of 0.5mg risperidone pills (i think my doctor actually gave them to me for sleep, though). what dose do you take and how many times per day? and does it make you drowsy? i know seroquel does something with histamine or histamine receptors that may cause its drowsiness does anyone know what risperidone affects?

MY son was on Risperdal last summer (he is autistic). He got so constipated that I had to take him off of it.

Has anyone else had constipation with it? it did seem to calm his nerves just a bit. HE has a VERY hard time around the 4th of July. Firewords terrify him to death. So we spend at least a week afterwards looked away in our house playing loud music, every fan in the house is on, and anything else we can figure out to filter out noises for him.

Maybe I should give it a try for him again.

It definitely knocked my anxiety out powerfully. It seemed to be less effective the next time I tried....it does not act on histamine much. It acts on 5HT2a, much suspected to be linked to anxiety...

It knocked me and my husband out. He agreed to try half the dose, and I took the other half. The next day we were a mess! I wonder why some react so well to the atypical antipsychotics, and others of us to the benzos? Fondly, Phillipa

I take .25 mg. Since I take it as needed, when I'm feeling really anxious and agitated, there's no set dosing schedule. But logically, it's generally when I'm up and about. I've been taking it nearly every day since my work blew up and I was called on the carpet. Once a day, or perhaps even once every other day, seems to be more than enough - even during this rough time. Most of the time I can go weeks without taking one.

Oh, I love my Klonopin too. It's my standard. I'm too afraid of taking an AP on a regular basis to replace Klonopin. I've been on 1 mg of Klonopin, with extra as needed, for eight + years.

But when the anxiety gets even stronger, the Risperdal works better. I don't know how to describe it. But when the anxiety goes deep into my gut, I know I need a Risperdal. When it's just shimmering along the surface (most of the time), a Klonopin works fine.

It's funny. I love all the anti-anxiety drugs, and none of the anti-depressant drugs.

Did you notice any weight gain on Risperdal?
When my son was on it, the doctor almost made me paranoid about a weight gain issue. He would even call me at home to ask how much my son had eaten that day.

It was weird.

Maybe it's because he was only 9 years old..

My son seemed more "calm" but almost lethargic. Since he couldn't talk very well to tell me how he felt on it, after we got past the bump, I removed him from it and he's been off meds since.

But I'll keep it in mind since 4th of July is coming around again.. YIKES.

I was on risperdal for about a year. I took it at night to help me sleep and it was great! I went to my new doctor a month ago to get a refill and she REFUSED to give it to me. I put on a lot of weight and she said it was one of the WORST weight gain meds... So I have been having a hell of time sleeping for the past month. What she doesn't know is that I have been taking remeron here and there to help me sleep, which is ALSO a HUGE weight gain med. The meds that work so well seem to cause so much weight gain, darn it!
