should Xanax considered being banned?

Posted by melspinyards on March 31, 2005, at 20:52:36

I do not believe it has enought controvery as Quaalude, in 1985.
I personally do not see any use in it becuase doctors do not recommend nor consider as a standard treatment. Its forgotten.
I take Ativan 1mg TWICE daily when needed.

I am diagnosed with panic disorder, with dissociative symptoms, and a whole lot of average anxiety to just add.

Does it meet any standards in being taken to court?

Well, i just wanted "break the ice" since i am new here. ;)

Thanks, hugs

Melody

Xanax worked very well for me for years. When I went off it it was with little trouble. I was just switched to another benzo. Valium is my drug of choice for my anxiety disorder and I'm lucky enough to have an older pdoc from the old school who agrees. The AD's don't relieve anxiety for me. Fondly, Phillipa

I have concluded after over one month trial that Klonopin DOES NOT help my anxiety.

I am thinking of asking my dr. for Ativan instead.. do you think he will agree to change me over or is Ativan considered a more addictive drug?

He offered me Xanex before so I wouldn't imagine it would be a big deal.

hi, welcome.

i don't think xanax is much worse than other drugs i've taken. doctors and consumers both seem aware that since it's shorter-acting than the others and needs to be taken more often, it can produce dependence. for some people, nothing works like xanax. i have taken or take ativan and klonopin during the day, but as two of my doctors said, "some people are just xanax people." every drug has side effects and dangers, and xanax is useful for a lot of people. i think the benefits overall outweigh the costs.

Spriggy, You're confusing me. Does your doc want you to take seroquel or do you just want to change meds? Wait til after you get your medical conditions clarified. Fondly, Phillipa

I used to take Xanax, then Xanax XR worked well for my anxiety at the 3mg/day level. Then i wanted to try and taper off of it. The first milligram was no problem. Went down from 3 - 2.5 mg and stopped there for 4 weeks. Then from 2.5 to 2.0 and stayed there for 4 weeks. Going further down on the Xanax gave me severe rebound anxiety so i choice to switch to Klonopin. I switched right over from 2 mg Xanax XR/day to 2 mg Klonopin/day without feeling any difference except maybe a little bit sedated the first few days. From there i could taper to 0.75 mg Klonopin without much problems. And that's where i stand now. For me Xanax was great for Anxiety much better than Klonopin. And i never felt any urge to raise the dosage. The only downside for me was the difficulty to taper. But since switching over to a long acting benzo took care of that i consider Xanax being top of the line and should not be banned.

You know at times ignorance can be bliss. The pdocs always told me a benzo is a benzo, and you can switch right over to another one. Well, it always worked until I found the equivlency charts after reading this Board and couldn't believe that klonopin was so strong. I always thought it was weak. I would take it with xanax as Rx'd and then just stop it with no side effects. Now I'm just glad to be back on the first drug that ever worked for me valium. Fondly, Phillipa

yea, i have taken Xanax .25mg few years back. It worked well, but my doctor seemed indirectly not ok with it, i said fine. He then put me on Ativan 1mg (2x daily). I guess certain doctors have their own beliefs, or opinions on treatment.

I know it is abused more than others in its class.

Quualude i dont know why, i think becuase of the massive overdosages, and abuse went to limit. Uncle sam did not want anymore problems.

Anyways, im sorry for this post, this is not me, i just posted for an ice breaker.

Good health to you

Melody

Wow that's funny.. He actually increased your dose because he was so afraid of Xanax. You had 0.25 mg's of Xanax which would be equal to about 0.5 mg's of Ativan(i'm not looking at a chart now i'm taking this from my memory which may be wrong). And he raised you to 2mg's daily. That's 4x the dose. And also some people find Ativan nicer than Xanax so i can't really decode this docs thinking.
