Does anyone remember Merital - nomifensine?

Posted by SLS on December 2, 2004, at 17:50:21

I'd be curious to know, for those people whom responded well to Merital, which other drugs they responded to. I responded to it only briefly. Although I dont respond well to existing antidepressants, I tend to be a tricyclic and MAOI responder. I'm trying to get an idea as to how important the dopamine reuptake inhibition was to this drug's therapeutic effects.

I responded well to Merital, but of course it was pulled off the market in 1985. Yes, it was a TCA that had dopaminergic properties.

I also responded well to Merital. It worked better than Nardil, which is the only other antidepressent that has helped me. I have tried every antidepressant and mood stabilizer over the last 30 years, and Nardil remains the only one that helps.

Hi,

Do you think that discontinued meds such as nomifensine should still be available for people who are resistant to other treatment???

Perhaps the patient and prescriber should be made to register with a monitoring service to continuously monitor the safety of the drug ie. a bit like the Clozaril monitoring Service that we have in the UK.

Ed.

Absolutely, but it wont happen here in the USA.:(

Our FDA has way too much power and control over the medications that are allowed in other countries and those allowed here.

Merital had been used sucessfully in Europe for a number of years before being released in the USA, but it was quickly squashed by Eli Lilly and other drug makers worldwide, on the pretence of a very few cases of illness that resulted in death.

This med had a very tolerable side-effect profile with few cases of sexual dysfunction reported.
