Tom, have you ever taken Haldol?

I've never taken Haldol but I have taken chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and it was awful. It caused severe akathisia and I had to go to the emergency department to be sedated. Haldol is even more likely to cause akathisia that chlorpromazine (hard to imagine).

Someone from psycho-babble described the effect of being injected with a neuroleptic, maybe Haldol.....'Akathisia was intolerable. Mentally, the med didn't sedate me at all. About two minutes after the injection I began having waves of panic and feelings of terror as well as a disorientation to time and situation. The ugliest psychotic episodes I have ever had were more pleasant than treatment with an antipsychotic.'

I took this from a post from several years ago.

Akathesia is definitely a problem with Haldol. I had terrible akathesia on it this Spring and I was only on 5 mgs a day.

I know how it feels to get severe akathisia. Even before I took the chlorpromazine, I was well aware that APs could cause akathisia (but I never realised how terrible it could be). The descriptions of akathisia in textbooks make it sound 'a bit annoying' but nothing more- especially as they claim it's releived by movement. Trying to describe how (severe)akathisia feels is impossible- it's like trying to explain what physical pain is like to someone who has never experienced it.

Thanks for your answers. I think my doctor and are considering Haldol only way down the line. I got akathisia that lasted over two weeks on Abilify. I agree that it is terrible however I respond to super low doses of drugs so akathisia might not be a problem with a low dose of Haldol. I'm looking for an AP that causes low sedation and Haldol has the lowest affinity for the H1 histamine receptor which is thought to be the culprit in AP induced sedation. We'll see but I definately don't want another case of akathisia. Thats bad s**t.

Tom, do you have amisulpride(Solian) where you live? It seems to cause less sedation than most APs. Akathisia is less likely with Solian than with Haldol.

If you do try the haloperidol, start with 500mcg(0.5mg) a day..... please post your experiences.

Regards,
Ed

I'd be very interested in trying Solian, but it is not approved in the U.S. I talked to my doctor about it, and he said he doesn' dabble in European drugs. So, where and how do people in the U.S. get Amisulpride? Solian actually has no affinity for the H1 histamine receptor and only affects the D2 and D3 receptors. I have read on this board that sedation can be a side effect but see where it might be a little less common than with other atypicals. I would be all for trying it I just don't know how to go about it.
